Overall, yes — this router delivers on nearly every front. I'm not a networking specialist, but I'm an experienced user who has owned several routers over the decades, and this one stands out for its depth of customization. Out of the box, the default settings will work fine for most users, but this router is clearly built for those who want granular control over every aspect of their network.My previous router, an Orbi 960, left much to be desired. It suffered from persistent satellite disconnects, even when hardwired via MoCA adapters, resulting in frequent complaints from family members and regular reboots. I live in a two-story, roughly 2,100-square-foot home, with the ASUS unit placed in the northeast corner of the second floor. After running new, longer CAT8 cables and positioning the router on a tall dresser in my office, I found that a mesh system is no longer necessary. The ASUS provides strong, consistent coverage throughout the house — matching or exceeding what the Orbi's satellite delivered — and I no longer experience dropped Zoom or Teams calls, which had previously been a source of embarrassment during work meetings.To get the most out of this router, I used Claude, an AI assistant with a Chrome browser extension that can navigate and manage web-based interfaces. After completing initial setup and connecting my laptop, I explored the ASUS management console, which offers an extensive array of menus, tabs, and sub-settings — ideal for anyone who wants full access to every configuration option. Beyond the standard interface, the router also supports an AI Board with additional add-ons, and can be upgraded with third-party firmware such as Merlin for even more customization.Through the AI Board's container services, I installed Unbound as my DNS resolver, which offers strong privacy protections against ISP and third-party tracking, along with faster performance than most public DNS resolvers. I also used AdGuard Home, a built-in service for blocking malware and ads, and added Skynet through the Merlin firmware for advanced IP blocking. These are just a few of the many available options.I won't pretend the setup process was simple. With Claude's help, I was able to review my full router configuration and receive detailed recommendations for optimizing performance and security. Claude navigated the console directly, screen by screen, and identified numerous optimizations that aren't enabled by default — for example, certain WiFi 6 power-boost features that require location verification through the mobile app before they can be activated. Claude walked me through each recommendation, and I approved changes as we went, working through the process over several days due to the volume of configuration involved.Once the core settings were optimized, I asked Claude for guidance on which AI Board and third-party services to enable. It handled the complexity of coordinating IPs, ports, and configurations across multiple services, ensuring data flowed correctly and that security measures weren't duplicated or misapplied — for instance, avoiding conflicting settings between IPsec and the Unbound DNS resolver.During this process, I encountered a few minor issues, such as certain Apple TV subscriptions being partially blocked (they worked fine on Roku). I explained the issue to Claude, which reviewed the logs, identified the blocked services, and created the necessary rules to resolve the conflict. The fix worked immediately.Could all of this be accomplished without AI assistance? Certainly, with enough patience and research. But for those of us without deep networking expertise, having AI support made the process significantly more manageable.In summary, this router is not designed for beginners. It's built for experienced users who want full visibility and control over every available setting. For that audience, it's an exceptional choice. Even as someone without formal networking expertise, I was able to fully configure and optimize this router with the help of Claude AI.
