  Love the overall quality of these shells, they look and feel top notch! Yeah it took me a bit to get it all done, but I followed a YouTube video and knocked it out in a couple of hours. Don’t listen to the people saying the included screwdriver is trash, it worked just fine for me! Everything was plug and play, IMO pretty easy if you’re somewhat new to working on things like this. The color is labeled glacier blue but to me it’s more on the lines of just plain clear, but I don’t mind how everything turned out!Ver másVer menos

  In another league compared to BASSTOP shells

  I've used BASSTOP's atomic purple shells up till this weekend when I received the eXtremeRate shells. They looked OK but had way too many small problems, and these eXtremeRate shells just blow them out of the water. Simply put, the BASSTOP shells did not fit together correctly, so there were all kinds of problems with regards to button press feel, bulging plastic, etc. They were not suitable for consistent behavior, and I would get phantom button presses all the time which caused me to stop using them pretty much altogether. On top of all that, they had a glossy finish which further detracted from their usability.The eXtremeRate shells remedy EVERY SINGLE ONE of those problems. There are complaints in some reviews about stripping screws, but I stripped the screws that came with the BASSTOP shells when removing those screws anyway, so you're kind of...screwed...either way. That said, I didn't have any issues with my eXtremeRate screws stripping. I used the original external tri-wing screws to attach the outer shells, and those seem to be made better for the most part, so that's a safe bet; and the internal screws aren't super tight going on, so it would take some unnecessary effort to strip them. These shells fit together perfectly, no longer cause erratic button presses due to incorrect fit, and they have a matte finish which is not only way more comfortable to use (glossy slips around too much) but also more accurately reproduces the look and feel of the GBC/N64 look that they are after.Some bonuses with the eXtremeRate shells include:1. Screwdriver which includes interchangeable bits for phillips head and tri-wing screws. And the top swivels, which makes using the screwdriver so much more comfortable. Big plus on that2. Replacements for every screw/spring in either joycon are included. When doing this in the past, I had one of the shoulder springs fly out of the controller when I removed the bumper while disassembling, and it took me literally hours to find it on the ground. You can still use the original parts, but every replacement you could need is included in the box.I cannot be more clear. These are the shells you want to buy. DO NOT BUY BASSTOP.TL;DR:* Everything fits together as it should* Button presses feel as they should* No issues personally with stripped screws* Bonuses in-box (screwdriver, replacements for every screw/spring)Ver másVer menos

  SO pretty!

  I will preface this by saying that you need to be in a good headspace and have a clean area to work before you start this project. It's not hard, but it's tedious! Follow along with the video for the glacier shell with commentary on YouTube and you'll be golden.Now, I couldn't find any photos of the glitter shells, so I took a bit of a gamble buying these. I'm so pleased with this color! The listing photos don't do them justice at all. The glitter is a gorgeous rainbow/holographic and the translucent green and blue is like a beautiful tropical ocean. I do kind of wish the buttons had a different texture so they stood out better.My tools were not magnetic, but I fixed that by rubbing a fridge magnet over the bits.I wish this kit included a pry tool for disconnecting the battery.And again, use the video they made for the glacier shell.Overall, the production quality feels great and I'll be recommending these to my friends.Ver másVer menos

  Straightforward enough, Good quality, Some caveats though

  I didn't bother watching a video as I'm impatient but figuring it out was fairly straightforward so installation as long as you take it slow and patient should be pretty easy. The ribbon cables inside the controller are the most annoying things out of the whole ordeal, so I'd highly recommend getting some cheap electronic tweezers as without those you'll definitely be sitting there for a while trying to get them in. There are also very tiny springs under the triggers which you'll want to be careful of not having them fly off into the netherworld, though it did come with replacement springs if you happen to lose them in the process. I didn't need to sand anything or make any shell modifications it was pretty much perfectly 1:1, much better than other shells I've experienced. I did not use the buttons it came with though and opted to use the black buttons since I think it looks nicer and they have a better texture. The buttons come on a little plastic mold so you may have to cut off some bits if you use them.The replacement screws are nicer than nintendos screws to avoid stripping since they use a #00 instead of a Y00, so make sure to use the included screws instead of nintendos. Just make sure to not screw them in excessively tightly or you'll have a hard time opening it back up since small screws are prone to stripping no matter the tools of which you use. Despite reviews on here in my opinion the screwdriver it came with is actually pretty alright. I had some nintendo screw drivers already from modding my gameboys and the one included was better than them, nice weight to it so you can apply pressure and slowly unscrew to avoid stripping.I ended up having to take back apart one of the them, as a ribbon cable ended up not being pushed in perfectly and the SR SL buttons didn't work. I anticipated this and made sure to not screw in the last black screws before testing them out. The switch has a menu option to test controller functionality so you can check each button is working properly which you should do before as it's very possible you'll not be able to open them back up. The black screws on the outside of the shell are the most prone to stripping.Goodluck! If you've never done something like this before definitely expect this to be an hour or two project, definitely doable though even if you're inexperienced.Ver más

  Great quality housings!

  Great quality shells! I bought two sets and the fit is perfect. Didn’t have any issues with lining everything up, and no issues with bulging. The matte finish is nice—as far as I can tell the transparent shells don’t have a coating like the solid colors. Might be wrong on that though. They look really nice when put together! As far as I could tell, there wasn’t any defects from the molding—that’s kind of rare with products like these. Usually at least one thing is slightly off. It looks practically identical to the OEM housings too (in terms of design).I didn’t use the provided screw drivers—I used my own, so I can’t speak to their quality. But, typically the pack in screw drivers with parts like this are made of lower quality, soft metal, leading to an increased risk of stripping screws. I’d highly recommend buying a high quality set yourself. A nice set of tweezers and a spudger are also highly recommended.As far as the difficulty of installation, I didn’t have a hard time with it. However, I work on electronics all the time and have been doing projects like this for years. There’s a lot of small ribbon cables and wires that could easily be damaged if you don’t know what you’re doing—if this is your first time doing anything like this, tread with extreme caution. This definitely requires at least intermediate skills working on electronics.Each joycon took me between 30 minutes and an hour. Definitely not a super quick swap. The left side is easier to do than the right side, because it has less jammed into it. Getting the buttons to stay put while you’re getting the board lined up and screwed in was a pain with the right side.Overall, very satisfied with my purchase. Great way to customize the look of your Switch, and freshen up old joycon!Ver másVer menos
