Expensive sound for a low price

This is an amazing value tube amplifier. The build quality is very good, weighs quite a lot for its size, and the sound output is superb! I was impressed considering this is a entry level amp and had low expectations. But man was I wrong. The mid range is 3D and holographic with a huge sound stage. Bass is also very good.You won't regret this amp.Ver más

What is this magic?......

A lot of folks have reviewed this here, so I'll try not to repeat too much. This simple item shows how much our fathers knew back in "the day". Classic class A design pure vacuum tube, no silicon involved.To that end you need sensitive speakers to play effectively. I use Klipsch 50 bookshelf.I also will try not to "blather" with the popular audiophile code words to make themselves sound important. HOWEVER sometimes certain words are the only way to describe.First impression before the 20 hour break in period is .....stunning..... The soundstage appearance of the music is truly open. And by that I mean if you close your eyes you get the impression of where the instruments are in the room, including especially any voices and singers. I can hear the different guitars on left and right sides and can tell they are different types, or at least their amps driving them are different. Voices are brought forward in the songs, separated from the rest of the accompanying instruments.With that last line let me explain. With solid state amplification, at least with everyday affordable amps, all the music and voices sound fine, really no big issues. However they are compressed into a leveled stream sounding at times muddy. And to be fair there are even more expensive tube amps out there that sound even better but.....this affordable gives you a wonderful taste of how music should sound.I used my usual "test tracks" on this amp and the sound is night and day. However with that there is a caveat....If you have good recordings, they sound great. If they are bad recordings trust me you WILL know. It gives them no quarter of forgiveness.This amp plays everything great, but shines with certain genres. Folk, classical, jazz, spoken word, and classic (i.e. 60's 70's) rock. The EL34 driver tubes are the perfect match for those types of music. I've played John (Cougar) Mellencamp, Dina Krall, Beatles, Jazz Lounge playlists, The Doors, Frank Sinatra, assorted classical tunes, America etc.Other tunes will indeed sound great, but those listed genres this amp will shine.I've matched the amp with my AKAI GX-636 reel to reel deck for a perfect analog system and I am blown away. You don't get DEEP bass extension but the bass is very good. You get snappy drum kicks, the bass guitar is very present, cymbals are there as well. Nothing is missing.I also experimented and line entered a iPod into it and that sounded great as well.AS a matter of fact there is more.....With songs I know by heart, I'm hearing extras. Extra instruments in the background like finger cymbals, other voices in the "background" or in the chorus I had not known there before. I can hear something only tubes can relay like the "fade" of a guitar string after it twangs. Yes all amps will play the notes, but I can now hear the notes as they blend and interact with each other.Pros: The sound is like hearing familiar songs for the first timeBuild quality is excellentTubes appear to be well made, though time will tellLooks and appearance is very nicePrice is fantastic for the sound deliveredCons: Exposed tubes are nice, but if you have kids or animals the tubes get really HOT. This is one reason tubesfell by the wayside. I fixed that by ordering a cage on AliExpress made just for this unitTubes will last for years, but they will eventually burn out. Extremely musical!!!

This is one exceptional integrated amplifier in terms of sound quality. I have owned amps or integrated amps from $800 to nearly $13,000. The only real problem I had with this was that one of the 6SN7 tubes is bad. That doesn't bother me because. I have plenty of NOS ones. Comparing this to my $1,300 integrated amp, there is a difference. The $1,300 one is a little more focused and a little bit better sound staging. That said, the clarity and musicality and sweetness of the sound on this one is incredible. If you are going to spend anywhere in the 200 to $1,500 range, try this first. Now I substituted the 6SN7 tubes and I tried substituting the EL34s but actually like the sound of the ones they supplied better. There are 3 or 4 things to remember. One, the instructions are all in what I assume is Chinese. You really have to look at the picture to know which tube goes where. The second thing is that there is no bias adjustment. Now that's not critical if you can be sure that your tubes are matched well, but most tube equipment these days has easy to adjust bias screws. Another thing to remember is that you only have 10 Watts. Single ended amps are known for having exceptional mid-range sound and are almost all low wattage. It is a myth that you need a ton of wattage. I have floor standing Audio Physic speakers that are 4 ohm but are decently efficient. I have no problem with volume. The final thing that maybe a deal breaker for a lot of people is that there's only one set of inputs. If you are just running 1 source you're great. If you have several sources you'd have to work around that one way or another. If you really enjoy your music, especially jazz, classical, and vocals, you should consider this. Even rock! The only people that wouldn't enjoy this, are those that are already playing too loudly, and those with inefficient speakers.Ver más

Sounds good.

I was going to wait awhile to review this due to the nature of the product. There is no hum or noise. It runs hours at a time with no problem thus far.I don't roll tubes , but I do replace tubes at times. I have replaced the rectifier tube with a svetlana, and the preamp tubes with Sylvania 6sn7 " chrome domes" nos . I decided to use the factory psvane el34 tubes because they sound good as is. I see obvious reasons why this amp is a good deal. Not paying for a tube cage. I don't need a tube cage. There are no children or cats here to get burned. Therefore I didn't pay for a tube cage.I do cool the power transformer with a fan and it runs significantly cooler because of it, but I did install a " wind barrier " to prevent wind from effecting the tubes. The tubes experience no fan wind at all.I have klipsch rp600m speakers in a different room so I don't use them on it.I use hivi swans 2.2 speakers and a speaker line level input subwoofer. There is no lack of sensitivity issue by using the hivi swans 2.2 speakers at all. The amp drives them efficiently and effortlessly.Volume is usually at about a 9 o'clock position to 10 o'clock, or about 25 to 35 percent maximum. I am into quality sound, not loud sound, and this amplifier and speakers, subwoofer get the job done with true hi fi clarity. I do use an equalizer to turn down midrange some , but there is no destroying of holographic, 3d imaging by it. It still produces holographic, 3d imaging by midrange decrease and is more pleasant to my ears. There has been no red plating of factory el34 tubes due to the svetlana rectifier tube and Sylvania 6sn7 preamp tubes, but it does sound better, probably mostly because of the nos Sylvania 6sn7 preamp tubes. As I said, I have decided to retain the factory el34 psvane tubes. I like the way it sounds with the original el34 tubes.I have played this amplifier for hours each day for 9 days. There has been no noise, no microphonics, no hum , and no heard bad distortion at all. There have been no glitches at all.Ver más

A lot of fun, and a good intro to tubes.

This is a great intro to tubes if you have efficient speakers. This amp is only 10 watts, which is surprisingly plenty IF you have the right speakers. Look for speaker efficiency ratings of 90 dB or better, with smaller woofers.

Impressive low priced tube amp

This amplifier is everything all the buzz says it is . This is a well made unit with a wonderful warm sound with great imaging. Anyone considering switching from transistors to tubes this is a great way to do it. Don’t worry about the low wattage because tubes handle speakers differently than solid state and if you have efficient speakers (90 db or better) you will not be disappointedVer más
