Great performance, but watch out for a hidden 2.4GHz stability bug with smart home devices

I've been running the GT-BE98 Pro for a few weeks and overall it's a fantastic tri/quad-band router — fast, plenty of range, and the Wi-Fi 7 throughput on 5GHz/6GHz has been rock solid. However, I ran into an issue that's worth flagging for anyone with a house full of 2.4GHz smart home gear (smart plugs, light switches, ceiling fans, cameras, etc.).The problem: Every night, at almost exactly the same time, my entire 2.4GHz network would drop — every device disconnected simultaneously, and several of my cheaper smart home devices failed to reconnect on their own, requiring a manual power cycle. It looked random at first, but after digging through the router's syslog output, the cause turned out to be the WPA Group Key Rotation Interval (GKRI) — a security feature that periodically pushes a fresh encryption key to every connected client at once. The factory default (3600 seconds / 1 hour... though ironically our symptom only manifested clearly once a day) is aggressive enough that some 2.4GHz IoT devices — the ones with cheap, older Wi-Fi chipsets — can't cleanly process a simultaneous group-key rekey and get stuck in a reassociation loop instead of quietly rejoining.The frustrating part: on the current firmware (3.0.0.6.x), Asus has completely removed the Group Key Rotation Interval field from the Web UI. There's no toggle, no menu, nothing — it's just gone. If you're affected, you can't fix it from the dashboard no matter how deep you dig into Professional/Wireless settings.The fix (if you're comfortable with SSH):1. Enable SSH access (Administration → System).2. Connect via SSH and confirm which radio index is your 2.4GHz band — on my unit it was wl3, not wl0 as some online guides assume. Check with nvram get wl<N>_nband (value 2 = 2.4GHz).3. Run: nvram set wl<N>_wpa_gtk_rekey=0 to disable periodic rekeying on just that radio.4. nvram commit to persist it, then service restart_wireless to apply it live.5. Reboot once to confirm it survives — mine did.This only disables rekeying on the 2.4GHz radio; your 5GHz/6GHz bands are untouched and keep rotating normally, so you're not meaningfully weakening security for your higher-bandwidth devices.Bottom line: if you're just using modern phones/laptops, you'll probably never notice this. But if you're leaning on this router for a smart home setup with a lot of budget 2.4GHz-only devices, expect nightly disconnects until you either disable GKRI via SSH or move those devices to an isolated IoT/guest network. Docked one star because this should be a Web UI toggle, not something that requires command-line surgery on a $700 router.Ver más
