Almost too much so for my taste as the loss after loss of young life almost made it hard to enjoy the lilting prose
Magnificently written, but a harsh, harsh story. Almost too much so for my taste as the loss after loss of young life almost made it hard to enjoy the lilting prose. The tale also is a stark reminder of how vulnerable people of all ranks were to even "simple" illnesses when the gifts of modern medicine were still unknown. I would love to read more of this author's language, but would wish for a less devastating tale.Ver másVer menos

A story set in Beaufort, NC
This is set in the town I live in, Beaufort, NC, & since I love history & it got excellent reviews I had to read it. It wasn't as good as I anticipated. I liked the story, although it was sad, but I'm not sure what it was that wasn't satisfying. Some things didn't ring true to me I think. Oh well...Ver másVer menos

Strong start but sloppy/lazy finish.
This book started off strong. I was captivated. It's a novel broken up into three sections. Basically present, past, back to present/future. The first and second parts seemed to be building to a strong third part, but the story just ended. It seemed like the author got a call from the publisher that her time was up and she just sent the file as is rather than finishing the book. And there were some unexplained pieces that could have been elaborated on. This isn't going to give anything away (at least I hope not): The grandfather finds a boat in the yard but it's totally random and the author hastily explains it in the moment rather than planting it there in a previous section. Also, as the escapee goes to the edge of the river she hears someone or something in the woods near her but this little hiccup of information goes no further than that encounter. It isn't explained. Who was it? Why didn't they stop her? Was it an animal? And as I said there is no ending to this book. Sometimes that's nice because your imagination can lead you down a road of thought... but this was just sloppy. No cliff hanger, just seemed like she didn't feel like writing anymore. If you have to read this book for book group give it a go, otherwise I recommend skipping it.Ver másVer menos

Great story telling
Great story telling, switching often, but not too often,between past and present. The characters are beautifullydrawn and their conflicts are real more than the works offiction. In the background of the novel, the RevolutionaryWar and slavery. It all works and often very movinglyVer másVer menos

The book is boring. Usually with these types of books you either learn something about the period it is set in, and/or you concentrate on the great story that just happens to take place in a different time, but to me this book offered neither. It was hard to get through- the character development was too slow and too subtle. It felt like the author was trying too hard to be meaningful and that the result was a story where nothing actually happens. I kept waiting for something to happen. I would not recommend this book to anyone.Ver másVer menos

If you aren't diving straight into this novel after a binge on fast-moving plot-heavy young adult novels, you'll probably be okay, but for me the slow-moving, wandering, poetic language was off-putting and frustrating. I was enjoying the story behind all the pages, but wanted it with a little less throat-clearing. Powerful especially in the first section.Ver másVer menos
