Exceeded expectations

This was the easiest set up and go right out of the box. The screen is perfect size and the colors are brilliant and sharp.

Beautiful display. All day battery. Camera app mystery to solve.

I've been using this laptop for a few months now and have really liked it, but I do have a few privacy concerns. First, the privacy concern: when I open the camera settings in the system settings, I keep getting an error that reads: "An app is using the camera now. Settings changed here or in the app will affect the app and camera preview below." The very first time I turned the laptop on and opened the camera settings, I saw this. I have no idea what other app is using the camera which is disturbing to me. I closed the camera by moving the switch that physically covers the camera's lens because I don't want some app spying on me.Now for all the good things about this laptop.1. Battery life. In my "real world" use, which includes browsing, writing, spreadsheets, watching videos and making video calls, etc., battery life is about one day.2. Display. The display is beautiful. It's big with room for a lot of spreadsheet rows and columns using normal sized fonts. I love the colors. It is a bit more reflective than I like—a matte screen cover may be handy here.3. Processing, memory, etc. This machine works great under light to normal use—spreadsheets, word processing, browsing, videos, etc. I've used it occasionally for doing some light post processing for photos and videos, but I wouldn't consider it powerful enough to serve as my full-time machine for these tasks.4. Storage. It has a 512 solid state drive, which makes it fast (file saves are pretty quick) but if I were to make this my full-time computer, I'd need a cloud storage service since I have a gazillion bytes of photographs.5. Camera. This is so nice! I love the camera. I'm super disappointed that I haven't been able to access the advanced camera options because of the weird app using the camera issue (see my mention of that in the opening paragraph above). However, there are lots of other controls that let me customize framing, portrait lighting, eye contact, background effects, creative filters, brightness, contrast, sharpness, and saturation.6. Physical size and weight. This is a big laptop, but could be a travel option since it's light weight—just needs a big bag to carry it around in.7. Connectivity. This has a pretty standard set of options: 2 USB-C, audio, and USB-A (the USB-C and USB-A are all 10 Gbps). What's not included that could be handy: an SD card reader.8. Keyboard and touchpad. The keyboard is comparable to a lot of laptop keyboards. It's neither super clicky nor quiet. The keys have some depth. They're backlit (with timeouts). I'm not a touchpad person so I'm not going to comment on the gigantic touchpad (other than it's gigantic).9. Build. It's fine. The case is made from both aluminum and recycled plastic. It's neither cold, shiny, nor super slick. The color is fine—not flashy. The raised "feet" are built in which means they're not going to fall off like sticky plastic feet, and they keep the base of the laptop raised for cooling.10. Software. It's loaded with all the general stuff including manufacturer and vendor software so expect all the popups asking you to sign up for whatever subscription they're offering. One of the most prominent listing items is it's AI features which I didn't sign up for since 1) login is required (I shy away from sharing my personal information far and wide), and 2) I still don't know what app is accessing the camera and for what purpose.11. Wifi. No issues. It connects easily to my home and travel wifi options.Overall, a nice laptop from a company with a long tech history. Perhaps priced a little higher than comparable options.Ver más

Great speed with some gaming/video limitations

I reviewed the HP Omnibook 5, model 16-fb0299nr, with 16GB memory and a 512GB hard drive. This is a great laptop for work/school productivity tasks which it can handle with ease. It is not a gaming laptop, but could play older games or less graphically intense games. Without a higher end GPU, it could not play any of the graphically intense modern games. This is predominantly also a function of its ARM CPU, which is radically different from things like Intel or AMD x86 architecture. It is not really compatible with games built for the x86 style processor. This is a tradeoff for its very low power consumption. More power means a shorter battery, and the battery life for this is tremendous. The description states almost 35 hours, and while I haven't run it that long unplugged, I'm guessing it is pretty close to at least 30 hours. You can easily go all day on this and well into the next, and maybe another without needing a charge.It has a nice feel, and seems sturdy and well made. The hinged lid also feels sturdy. The keyboard (which does not have a numeric keypad) has a good feel when typing. It is not backlighted, so if you type in the dark, you are out of luck. Graphics are good, with 2K resolution (1920x1080) and good for productivity tasks like document editing, spreadsheets, etc. This particular model does not have a touchscreen.The cpu is awesome considering its low power consumption. The ARM architecture Snapdragon X-X1-26-100 by Qualcomm benchmarks at 16,309 (Passmark score), with a single thread rating at 2869. It has 8 cores and 8 threads. This is comparable to an AMD Ryzen 5 5600H, but with less power consumption. It is about the same as a high-end business class laptop of a few years ago. It cannot play high-end 4K video well because of its ARM CPU architecture, but plays videos at its built in 2K resolution just fine.For the installation and setup, Microsoft Windows 11 Home Edition comes pre-installed. During setup, Microsoft removed the option to setup without WiFi and without a Microsoft account, but you can set it up with one, and then create a local account and delete the MS one if you are worried about privacy. I install a lot of apps and large software packages and am hoping I can upgrade the M.2 NVME SSD. I understand from searches that you can swap out the drive (don't quote me), but not the memory, as it is soldered onto the board. From first power-up to being able to open a browser and surf the net took me about 1 minute of total setup set-up time in several 10 second increments and 10-15 minutes of waiting around in between and for updates - about average.
