Works well, but status light color not ideal

Since all of my other cameras are Eufy brand, Aqara wouldn’t have been my first choice, but Eufy doesn’t have any doorbell cams that support Apple’s HomeKit Secure Video (and from what I can tell, neither does almost anyone else besides Aqara).This is my first doorbell cam, but I’ve installed lots of regular smarthome cameras and other devices. Installing it and setting it up wasn’t exactly a breeze, but that was mostly due to physical installation challenges in my old house, and then the usual tweaking to set up the Aqara app and HomeKit to my liking.(My house had no doorbell wiring and no way to run a wire through the wall up from the basement, so instead I drilled through the wall behind the doorbell and ran a wire from an indoor DC adapter - it’s not invisible but it’s good enough).The only real install issue I ran into was a problem with the latch that kept the unit from staying snapped into the wall plate; I had to superglue in a little chunk of rubber behind the latch to fix that. Maybe my unit was missing a piece?In day to day use the camera works really well, reliably recording events and notifying me about visitors. The video is sharp, it’s got a wide field of view, and night vision works well. It’s not the best at handling contrast; on sunny days bright areas get very washed out, but since I have a porch which keeps the area directly in front of the camera in shadow, it’s fine for me.The only image quality problem I’ve had since getting it set up, is that once while I was playing around with the night vision settings, the video turned red and wouldn’t go back to normal until I restarted the doorbell (to Aqara’s credit, when I used the app’s AI support chat, it told me that was a known issue and offered a workaround).The rest of the Aqara app (which you need even if you mostly only use the Apple Home app) is not the most intuitive or appealing - but it works. Overall it’s not really any better or worse than apps for other smart devices, and once HomeKit is working you don’t need to mess with it too often anyway.One thing I wish could be changed, is that the light in the doorbell button works like the status light in a typical security camera - it switches from blue to red while recording. That’s fine for a regular camera, but it means that anybody at my door sees the button lit up red, which looks like it’s broken or disabled and people don’t want to press it. I wish they would add a setting for it to stay blue!Finally, the doorbell comes with a single remote chime unit, which is fine since my HomePod also chimes. But you need to provide your own USB adapter to power it, plus I didn’t see any way to buy an additional chime. And even on max volume it doesn’t get anywhere near as loud as my old dumb wireless doorbell chimes.Ver más

Installation Pains, Works well once installed

I chose the G400 to replace a Ring doorbell. My decision was based on my experience with the U100 Smart Lock, which I liked so much that I ended up getting a second one for my garage entry door. With the G400, I was looking for a hardwired device, compatible with Apple Home, integration with my Aqara Smart Lock and the ability to record video on my NAS.First the bad. My installation experience was impeded by Aqara being down on July 3, 2026. It was down most of the day and after mounting the hardware, I was unable to pair it to the app. It wasn't until the evening when they were back online and I was able to set it up. However, once it was set up, the G400 sounded an alarm on both the doorbell unit and the chime unit. Not knowing what was wrong, I quickly unmounted and removed the power, hoping it would reset. I then reconnected and after booting, the alarm sounded again. I tried disconnecting the reconnecting the wires again and again to no avail. I actually damaged the wire in the process given number of times I did it. I finally looked it up online and saw that there was a tamper feature, which I can turn off in the app. So one more time reconnecting, and then once it booted and alarm sounded, I was able to go into the app and turn it off. This seems to be a common problem from what I've read, but one easily solved if the option and a warning was part of the set up process vs. just being default.With it finally installed, looking at the picture, the aspect was certainly different from my prior doorbell as it's not as wide but is tall. Given it's not as wide, I decided that it would work better with the wedge, so I had to remove the doorbell again to add the wedge and then re-install. A couple of additional comments on the install. The G400 is narrower than my prior doorbell, so in my case, I needed to patch some holes and touch up the paint behind the unit. As for attaching to the mount, it's simple to remove from the wall with just a paperclip. I wished they had use security screws instead, which was how my prior doorbell was mounted. Of course the G400 has the tamper alarm, but not sure I want to risk it going off all the time.I've been using it for 10 days and so far, I find it to work fairly well. I was able to add to Apple Home and it provides a RTSP stream that I use to record video on my NAS as well as live stream to a PC. So far, I've had to reboot the G400 once, when the livestream stopped working on my PC, but have had no other issues. I like that it can detect people, vehicles, animals, packages and motion, though I find the motion to be too sensitive even on the lowest setting and after reducing the field of vision. I am though, highly disappointed that some of these features are behind a paywall, especially package detection. That's really a big reason for having a doorbell camera these days, not happy that there's a charge for it. Aqara does include a 90 day free trial, but not something I would pay for. My prior doorbell also had a paywall, which was the main reason I replaced it.The video on the G400 is very clear. I'm using via wi-fi and have not noticed any lags, that it works with 5ghz wi-fi is certainly a plus. Night vision is not in color, but it's very good. If not for the install issues, I would have rated the G400 higher as it is a very good device once installed and it's a good value.
