An interesting retelling!
The princess and the pea is an interesting story and I love what Brittany did with it. There's an interesting back story and some fun side characters. I loved the ending!

Definitely Worth The Read!
I kind of loved how Norah and Phillip had to get to know one another and fall in love in an unconventional way. It definitely made the story more interesting, as did the side effects of the illness Prince Phillip had when he was younger.I really liked how spirited Norah was, and even riddled with doubt and uncertainty, she still couldn't let Philip suffer more than he already had. Honestly, I thought the two were adorable in how limited they were in communication. And awkwardness aside, it was fun to read all the different ways Norah kept trying to communicate and get to know Philip better.I liked Nanny, the cunning fae, and her "interesting" way of helping Norah. She didn't have the biggest part, but she certainly was fairly memorable.I'd definitely recommend this book for anyone who likes fairytale retellings and sweet romances.Ver másVer menos

Sweet & clever Princess and the Pea retelling with PIRATES
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, although I will say, I was confused at the beginning. Like many good stories, it dropped the reader into the world without too much exposition, but in this case, without that exposition, I was a bit stumped on what was happening for a chapter or two. Later, it's made clear, but I was struggling to keep up. However, once I got the gist of who was who, I couldn't put it down. ( received an advanced reader copy of this book, but my thoughts are all my own.)Norah and Phillip's struggles are surprisingly relatable even though their circumstances are far removed from reality. Norah feels like she is watching her life slip through her fingers while dreaming of change, and Phillip is trapped without communication, struggling to hold onto hope. I loved how they both made the conscious decision to love the other, but I liked it even better when they showed their flaws and insecurities, especially when that resulted in consequences for the people around them. It made them all the more real to me, and it made the ending all the sweeter. I definitely felt anxious at multiple times through the story, wondering about the outcome and how everything was going to be resolved. But thankfully, there was enough sweetness (and a good pace) to keep me from getting too worried. (And speaking of sweetness, I love how Norah is just sassy and flirty enough to be fun without being too dramatic. Plenty of swoon, but still clean!) And did I mention there are PIRATES? They show up more later, and there's more swashbuckling fun than I expected.If I could change one thing, I wish there was slightly more attention given to the fear of someone being trapped forever with no means of communication. That's the unfortunate reality for some people living with chronic illnesses, and I wish they had specified that the caretakers would love them through it anyway even as they worried. It's a legitimate fear, to be sure, but I do wish they had stressed unconditional love despite it.Overall, I loved this story and the characters, and I know it will be one that I re-read over the years. New twist on the "Princess and the Pea"
I've been looking forward to reading this book for a while, and I'm happy to say that I enjoyed it, especially with its new twist on the "Princess and the Pea." The illness and curse intrigued me as it had different long-term effects based on the person. The magic in Norah's family also fascinated me by how it worked. It could offer healing to most people, but could go further to offer complete healing of any physical, magical, or mental ailment to the spouses who married into the family. This ability results in Norah's current predicament, and she is a very authentic character. Her struggles with wanting to decide her future while still finding herself forced into certain paths due to circumstance made her relateable. Her interactions with Phillip were genuine, and her heart shone through those interactions. Love is a choice. Princess Freya was an interesting character, and I'm not sure what to make of her. She oscillated between kindness and coldness. She did her best, and everything worked out in the end; I'll give her that. Readers who enjoy Fichter's other books in the Classical Kingdoms will enjoy this book as will fans of fairytale retellings.Ver másVer menos

I've never read The Princess & The Pea but this book makes me want to
I'll start by saying that I've never read the original fairy tale but after reading The Princess and a Test of Power, I'm definitely curious about it!Brittany immediately launches you into this new world (which to be honest is my favorite...I struggle with slow starts!) We very quickly get to know Norah and her reasons for being in hiding, her stubborn charm, and independent nature. After losing her family tragically, she carries a lot of power and responsibility and she has to figure out the best way to move forward. She escapes to a place she's attempted to go before - the castle- and finally gets help.Seeing her relationship and dynamic with Prince Phillip shift and change melted my heart. I had the biggest soft spot for Prince Phillip due to his inability to communicate and the lonely world he was forced into -- similar to the way Princess Norah was forced to live in too. I was desperately rooting for her to see him for who he was and for him to be healed.This book had all the feels and I appreciate the realness of Brittany's characters. They always battle with insecurities and the realities of their situations in a way that feels authentic.Highly suggest you pick this one up! Sweet retelling of The Princess and the Pea.
Norah has been with her Nanny since she was a child and her island home was pillaged, burned and her family killed. The pirates who did the dastardly act wanted revenge because their son died of a mysterious illness that they were hoping her family (who were gifted with the ability to heal by the mer people) could heal. Nanny has protected her by keeping her bright red hair covered by a headband that turns it black. When the pirates who killed her family find her and Nanny, she escapes to the palace of the prince she’s been betrothed to since she was nine. Phillip was sick with the illness that decimated most of the children at the time, and it left him with the side effect that he was losing his ability to communicate. At first he lost some words, then his speech entirely, then he lost his ability to write. Norah had witnessed first hand that when her sisters married for love, their husbands were miraculously healed of any sickness they had, but doubts plague her that it may not work out for her, and she’s not sure whether what she feels for Phillip is love or compassion. As she spends time with Phillip, she is drawn to him, but he’s still losing more of his ability to communicate with her. She needs to trust the Maker to heal both their hearts.Ver másVer menos
