Block out some time and read this classic
I can't remember where I first heard about The Count of Monte Cristo or why I decided to read it in the first place, but I'm very glad I did. I'm not going to provide a synopsis of the story because you can read other reviews or go to Wikipedia, Goodreads, or elsewhere to find that; instead, I'll review my experience with TCoMC and write why I recommend it.First, this book is long. I think it's somewhere around 400,000 words in length (Google a site called ReadingLength) and has 117 chapters. However, don't let that deter you from picking up this book, because you will not want to put it down once you start. It took me about three weeks to read at a comfortable pace but I often felt like I was being hurtled from one page to the next, and that's a good thing. This book really is a page-turner not only because of the plot but because Dumas's writing and the translation are smooth.Second, the characters are realistic and intriguing. No one is above reproach in TCoMC. One could argue that there is no "good guy," and that's what makes the story so compelling. Everyone has a good side and a bad side. Every character is important and crucial to the story in some way. It's important to remember who is who so you can keep up with the story and understand what's going on. Trust me, it adds to the dramatic irony.Third, for its time, I'm not sure there's a single book like it. TCoMC has betrayal, conspiracy, kidnapping, romance, infidelity, murder, and even treasure hunting, among other things. Need I say more?A note: Amazon asked me if there was violence and sexual content in the book. The answer is yes, there is some of both. However, the violence is minimal and not graphically-depicted, and the sexual content is only inferred. Again, don't let either deter you from reading this classic. If I had to give this book a movie rating, it would be a middle-of-the-road PG-13 for violence, a little sexual content, and mature themes.Ver másVer menos

One of the top ten greatest novels of all time!
I've lost count of how many times I have read this classic novel, and I have been on a quest for many years for the real 'complete and unabridged' version for over 15 years. Just when I thought I had found it in the two translations published by the Modern Library and Penguin Classics (Robin Brussels translation), both published in 1996, I found two minor issues between them. Needless to say it is close to impossible a perfect translation as to completeness and style of language when a book approaches 170 years in age.This version is very readable and I was ecstatic to find the 1st English translation on kindle. Many other reviewers have spoken in depth about the novel I just have some general comments.Many people are turned off when they hear that a major portion of the work evolves on Edmond Dante's revenge on those that had stolen his life, father and bride from him at 23 years of age. When you tell them that his vengeance is based on uncovering certain crimes committed by those individuals and the balance of the book is his rewarding those that stood by him and those he loves and the final lesson Edmond had to learn was that he could love again it may pique their interest. If not they can go to their graves having missed reading one of the greatest novels written and that has inspired countless other novelists to write in a similar vein. Based in part on true events as were most other Dumas novels, Dumas created a story unsurpassed to this day. Published in parallel with the first book of the d'artagnan France's The Three Musketeers, another top five novel, which eventually was carried through multiple sequels, we begin to wonder if Dumas ever slept at all.If you have never read Monte Christo, please take the time to, you will never regret it or forget it. The novel has that kind of impact to those who give it the chance. If you have only read it once long ago, take the time to get reacquainted with this work.Ver másVer menos

A classic!
A must read! Nineteenth-century books are often slow (paid by the word, so wordy), but once I got into this book it became an addictive page-turner (even electronically). Yes, it was discursive, but Dumas built significant characters whose parts, even sorta minor, were brilliantly woven into the total tapestry of the story. I first read and enjoyed the book as a teenager; now in my golden-oldie years I read it again with renewed interest. I had recently finished "The Black Count" (also an excellent book), a biography about Alexandre Dumas--the father--a mulatto son of an impoverished (at first) French aristocrat trying to make it on one of the Caribbean sugar islands; mother was a slave. But he came back to France with his son, inheriting a vast, unexpected fortune. Dumas (the father of the writer) became a respected general, fighting for the the ideals of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. Fought with and for Napoleon in northern Italy and Egypt, and ended up in southern Italy, in prison, with a one of Napoleon's intellectuals as a co-prisoner. Dumas (the writer) idolized his father, and wove his father's story into his two most famous novels: The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers (next on my list of re-reads). I read "The Count of Monte Cristo" with new insights and understanding. (And saw a lot of parallels to politics today, in 2019...look for yourself). Way better than any of the movies (I immediately watched two of them, after finishing the book). Highly recommended. It is a book that should be on everyone's "must read" list. Lots of insights. This book recommended to many young readers
The Count of Monte Cristo is an interesting tale. I was always told it was one of the classics of literature, but I never got around to reading it, until now. After completing the novel, I was surprised how all of the film version of this tale failed to capture the true beauty, scope and strength of the story. Further, how film makers/screen writers have changed whole characters, plots and actions to simplify their version of the story. This version of the novel is occasionally difficult to read as some of the language and phrasing is very old fashion and cumbersome. The narrative is affective. I found that the many parallel story lines of different characters drew me away from the central tale. This book recommended to many young readers, but I feel it needs an adult understanding to appreciate both the moral and anguish issues; or an adult explaining and guiding a young mind. The renderings, at the beginning of each chapter, helped to bring the story to life and enrich the experience. I recommend this novel as an entertaining and intelligent read. Great story and one of the best by Dumas (the elder).
This book is one I have read before and wanted to re-read with my husband since he had never read it before. During the cocktail hour I read it aloud, which brings a three-dimensional quality to any good book. (Good wine and chocolate are not to be overlooked, either.) Many readers, no doubt, have seen one or more movie versions of this delightful story but they pale beside the book. So many details had to be omitted in order to force the story into a certain time period for television viewing, at least in the Richard Chamberlain version. (Having said that, however, Mr. Chamberlain was a superb Count.) In this book we see the intricate plot every step of the way with no gaps. Some people do not believe in the concept of revenge but when any reasonable person reads of what happened to the young hero I would think her/his mind could wrap around the need for it under the circumstances. And call it Karma if you don't like the word "revenge." Without saying how the Count avenged himself and others who were wronged by the evil guys the wrongdoers damned themselves with their own words and in most instances were the instruments of their own punishment for the atrocious pain they inflicted. This is a long book and is typical of the XIXth century Romantic period of literature with exotic people and locales, swash and buckle, romance and the aforementioned revenge so if you are looking for a quick and dirty story this is not it. A knowledge of the history of the early XIXth century as well as some foreign language experience (mostly Italian and French) will enhance your reading experience. Hope you enjoy!Ver másVer menos
