A character-driven thriller
I read this in one day (and nearly one sitting). I am sad to leave Kenny Lane and its inhabitants, while also satisfied and at peace. The world created here, the found family, touches my heart. I thought this was a gun-toting-granny-caper -type novel, but it is not. And I am so glad to be wrong. It is a character-driven, meticulously structured story filled with humor and heartache.The two timelines are so effective and fit seamlessly without interrupting the flow of the story. The current timeline on Kenny Lane provides wicked humor, heart-warming emotion, a noisy little dog, and a scene-stealing child. Persephone’s forced friendship with Elsie is pure gold and worth the read alone. But when circumstances lead to Elsie’s past coming to light, we are provided with the second timeline – a look back at her vulnerable childhood to reveal the truth about “Mad Mabel” and her notorious deeds. This timeline is suspenseful and emotional. Here we have family trauma, loneliness, and lessons on the power of suggestion, gossip and societal conformity. The balance in tone and content between the two timelines is compelling. The story, all together, is a gripping and deeply heart-felt experience that leaves an indelible impression.Ver másVer menos

There is something unsettling and oddly charming about this sweet granny
There is something so unsettling and oddly charming about a sweet little granny who may or may not be a killer, and Mad Mabel absolutely nailed that vibe. This book was quirky, creepy, dramatic, and honestly so much fun to read. Mabel was the kind of character that completely steals the story, unpredictable, funny, sharp, and just unhinged enough to keep you questioning everything.What really made this book stand out for me was how attached I became to the characters. They felt messy, human, and strangely lovable even in the middle of all the chaos. I flew through this book because the pacing was so fast and addictive. Every time I thought I had things figured out, another twist would hit and send the story in a completely different direction.The atmosphere was fantastic, the mystery kept me hooked until the very end, and the balance between dark humor and thriller elements was done so well. It was fun, quirky, thrilling, and a little chaotic in the best possible way , exactly the kind of thriller I love picking up.Ver másVer menos

Mystery of quirky twists and turns
This book is hard to put down. I enjoyed all of this book! It is a mystery full of lovely twists and turns. The chapters are short, and each tells a new part of the past and present, but are easy to follow. There is love, empathy, compassion, life of a child, tragedy, and deaths in this story. fascinating
Sad, happy, cruel, well developed characters, Mabel is complex, hilarious and so strong, book is impossible to predict as you’re reading - ultimately redemptive

Great book, I couldn’t put it down. 4.5 stars, I rounded up.
Elsie is a grumpy octogenarian living in a neighborhood where she seems to be the resident curmudgeon. She spends her days visiting with her friend Daphne, being annoyed by her 7 year old neighbor the precocious and pesky Persephone, and getting into tiffs with the other neighbors. When her elderly “nemesis” next door dies and his death possibly not accidental , Elsie falls under suspicion. It then comes out that Elsie is actually “Mad Mabel”, famous for being Australia’s youngest murderer who went to prison at 15 for murder. She has been living under the radar as Elsie since her release, until now.As people start harassing Mabel, a couple of young journalists come to interview her and let het tell her side of the story.Mabel delves int her life story, starting as a young child. Neglected, unwanted, misunderstood, scapegoated, her story develops and we begin to see so many events that shaped Mabel into who she is today. For the sake of avoiding spoilers, I won’t go deeper, but Mabel’s story is deep, dark, painful, there were times when I was so frustrated that a child could be faced with many of the things Mabel was faced with. Still, there is always a shadow of doubt about Mabel and I found myself questioning Mabel at times, as her story is shared.The ending is poignant, and again, for fear of spoilers I won’t go into details, but although there is sadness there is also redemption and resolution.Well done, interesting and the author manages to give Mabel so many layers. Worth the read!
If I could have given this book 4.5, I would have done so. It was a slow start for me, but once I got a few chapters in, I was hooked. I like books that both entertain and teach us a lesson. Mabel teaches us not to judge based on rumors, no matter how convincing they may be. Facts are facts, and rumors are not facts; yet they can ruin so many lives. I knew I would like this book when I read the subtitle: "Sanity is subjective." Mabel will have you questioning your views about so many things. I made me think, laugh, cry and rejoice.
