A delightful book - thoughtful, insightful, captivating

What a delightful surprise this book turned out to be!!!The Correspondent is unlike anything I've read recently. It's thoughtful, insightful, and quietly captivating. Rather than relying on dramatic twists, it draws you in through beautifully developed characters and the gradual unfolding of their lives.Sybil is a fascinating protagonist. As the story progresses, there's an underlying thread of curiosity about what experiences, especially the loss of her son, shaped her into the person she became. That question lingered throughout the novel and kept me eagerly turning the pages.Virginia Evans writes with grace and authenticity, creating a story that is both intimate and emotionally resonant. I couldn't put it down.After I finished the book, I was delighted to discover that Virginia Evans is from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, close to where I live. I had no idea when I picked up the novel, and it made me appreciate this remarkable debut even more. Kudos for crafting such a beautifully written and refreshingly original novel. A different kind of novel

This novel sounded very interesting by most of the reviews. I decided to give it a go and judge for myself. Sybil pulls you right into her world with her variety of letters to friends, family, authors and such. Who knew you could “read” a bunch of letters and enter someone’s life.I’ve always have been a fan of the handwritten letter. It’s so personal and sometimes such a nice surprise for those not expecting it.I’ve often tried to purchase personal diary’s and letters from EBay as a novel gift or touch of decor in my home but most are either out of my budget or not very authentically written. (You can tell very easily). Reading this book has sort of made me happy to be able to get my hands on something in the meantime.Excellently written, no flattened words: in fact, it left me wanting more!Can’t wait to see this come to life in a movie!Ver más

Highly Recommended

THE CORRESPONDENT is written by Virginia Evans.It is an epistolary novel.This term is used in literature to describe a story telling format where aplot/story unfolds through correspondence, rather than 3rd-person narration.This style creates an intimate, first-person perspective - the reader feels asthough they are eavesdropping on a character’s personal thoughts.Sybil Van Antwerp spends her mornings writing letters - letters to friends,family, local university officials, authors, neighbors, businesses. This is theway, the manner, in which she communicates with others.Sybil expects her world to go on as it always has - as a mother, a grandmother,wife, divorcee, distinguished lawyer, friend - she has lived a very full life.When letters from someone in her past force her to examine one of the mostpainful periods in her life, she realizes that a letter she has been ‘writing’for years needs to be read and she cannot move forward until she finds itin her heart to offer forgiveness.I was swept off my feet by this book.Sybil is a dynamic, wonderful character. Her letters are so thoughtful,interesting, charming, cranky, funny, happy, sad and full of life.I would highly recommend this book. *****Ver más

A Quiet, Powerful Novel That Will Stay With Me Long After 2026 EndsI read more than 200 books a year across multiple genres, but if I’m being honest, I usually read for escape. Give me romance, fantasy, suspense, or military heroes charging into danger, and I’m happy. So when I picked up The Correspondent by Virginia Evans for a reading challenge, I did so with a fair amount of reluctance and a lingering memory of my seventh-grade English teacher insisting I read “something with more substance” than my beloved romance novels.What I did not expect was a book that would quietly dismantle me emotionally.The Correspondent is not a “just one more chapter” type of novel. In fact, I started and stopped several times while reading because this is a book that demands reflection. Through a series of letters spanning years, Evans slowly reveals the life, regrets, relationships, wisdom, and heartbreak of Sybil Van Antwerp, one of the most authentic and emotionally complex characters I have encountered in years.There is a passage very early in the novel where Sybil describes her evolving vision loss. She writes about life suddenly feeling as though “the movie went black,” and later describes looking at flowers she no longer recognizes. It is only a few lines long, but I had to stop reading after page nine because I realized I was crying without even noticing it.That moment forced me to think about a dear friend living with progressive vision loss. We had laughed together over the years about white canes, assistive devices, and even her oversized seeing-eye dog. Yet never once had I truly asked her what it felt like emotionally as her world slowly dimmed. After reading this book, I finally did. That conversation became one of the most meaningful we have ever shared.That is the power of this novel.Another reviewer wrote that she did not simply read The Correspondent—she lived it. I completely understand what she meant. Sybil’s letters feel intensely personal and real. Each piece of correspondence reveals another layer of her life while also forcing the reader to reflect on their own relationships, memories, and missed opportunities for connection.The novel also left me mourning all the letters, photographs, and cards I have thrown away over the years. Evans beautifully illustrates how correspondence preserves not only memories, but entire lives.Virginia Evans deserves every accolade this novel receives. Her storytelling is intimate, thoughtful, and deeply human. I can easily see why so many book clubs have selected this novel because the discussion topics are endless: aging, memory, grief, relationships, authenticity, regret, forgiveness, and the extraordinary power of words.Of the 93 books I have read so far this year, The Correspondent is the one I believe I will still remember long after 2026 ends.

Wonder and Awe

What a lovely story. Easy to read and beautifully developed. I now feel the need to write a letter! Thank you for the lovely lens into what aging can be, harrowing and dark at times, but filled with sparkling lights of hope and reconciliation.

Mixed feelings all around, but “good” overall

This feels less like a novel and more like a messy collection of subplot stories in the late stages of a person’s life.On the one hand, that makes it difficult to tell a cohesive story. On the other hand, that’s how real life is.It’s not easy to tell a good (or even decent) story via a series of letters and I was skeptical Virginia Evans was going to pull it off, especially with the mess of subplots and especially with how often I got bored and chose to read other books instead.By the end though, I would say she generally pulled it off. The overall structure is imperfect, especially with the mess of subplots, some of which go unresolved and end up feeling like unnecessary distractions, but it (the overall structure) is there.The main character is another “on the one/other hand” situation. At times, she seems like a sweet old lady you can’t help but have endearing feelings toward. At others, you’re like “wow, she really just said that?” Some readers will take issue with this dichotomy, but to me, it’s another thing that makes it feel “real.” After all, aren’t our grandparents and aging parents just like that?The tail end of her arc feels a little rushed, but even that I find to be somewhat “realistic” for someone in the late stages of their life with failing health.Overall, I’d say it’s a “good” book, one that I have a hard time choosing a rating for. Definitely lower than 5 stars. Definitely higher than 2 stars. Let’s go with a soft 4, or a 3.5 rounded up or something.Ver más
