Makes strike plate installations look professional.
I should have bought one of these a long time ago. In my younger days as a finish carpenter, I installed a lot of doors. Most of my remodel jobs involved new strike plates. I got pretty good at chiseling out the door and jamb to accommodate the plates and prided myself on being as flawless as I could be. But it was a business where time is money. I was pretty quick at it but not everybody on my crew performed at that level. A tool like this would have saved a lot of time. A couple of good taps with the hammer on this thing takes a lot of the work out of installing door hardware in situ. You still have to chisel out the pocket, but your boundaries are nice, sharp and clean. That’s the part your customer always notices. I think this is a great value for the money. Every finish carpenter ought to have one in their tool kit.Ver másVer menos

Works but requires a chisel too.
This tool has both a round corner rectangular blade for cutting the latch plate outline and a half-round blade for removing wood from the latch area. The outline blade works okay, but is not marked with the recommended depth of cut (5/32"). I scribed a line all around the outside of the blade to assist in determining when the proper depth was achieved and this worked well. The blade and phenolic material that the device is made from hold up to the hammering necessary to drive the outline blade into the door, and that does take some work. I found that driving part way in then removing the material with the half-round blade allowed the tool to reach the full depth easier than trying to do it all in one go. I also noticed that if the wood was particularly dense it worked best to use the tool to outline the cut, then deepen the outline with a regular chisel, then go back to the tool to round the corners. This tool does not eliminate the need for chisels and in fact the half-round blade will not cut the full 5/32" deep.Also, if the door is painted remember to cover the work area with masking tape as using the half-round blade will scare an unprotected finish. The outline blade is slightly larger than the latch dimensions, so if you are looking for a real tight fit, don't use this tool. Overall, decent tool that makes cutting rounded corners much easier, but don't forget your regular chisel to finish the job. A router would be the better tool to use is you have one.Ver másVer menos

Get this instead!!!! Don’t waste your time!!!
Get this product if you want to take forever. Not intuitive and not great. Replaced it for a much better product. The ryobi door latch installation set. Basically an all in one better blade better durability with a directional plate and a screw that clicks in place to be used as a screw driver. Time is money and this product is a time suck. Not worth it and not great at chiseling.Ver másVer menos
