Fatal Invasion is written by Marie Force. This is the latest book in the Fatal series about Inspector Samantha Holland and her husband, Vice- President Nick Cappuano. The series follows the lives of the couple as they attempt to live a normal life in Washington, D.C. They want their adopted son, Scotty, to be able to grow up being a normal little boy, except that he is the son of the Vice-president and always surrounded by the Secret Service. However, Scotty easily adapts to this life. Sam, however, makes the adjustment with difficulty. She is stubborn and resistant to having anyone tell her what to do. The rules she has to live under are restrictive to her and she just can’t do it. She has refused Secret Service protection for herself and has insisted she keep her job as a police officer. She does not conform to the “ideal Second Lady” image. Luckily for Sam, her husband, Nick, agrees with her. He softens the road between Sam and the Secret Service when she goes inadvertently thwarts them. She does not intentionally thwart them, she just lives her life as she sees fit. This makes for some interesting conflicts between the Secret Service and Sam.Sam wants to accompany Nick on his three-week trip to Europe for the President; but she just doesn’t see how she can do it. One of her men, Freddie, is getting married and going on his honeymoon, her second in command, Tommy, is acting strangely and she isn’t sure he can handle more stress, and she questions both of them leaving their son even though he will be well taken care of. She just isn’t sure she can leave for three weeks. Nick helps by cutting his trip down to one week and Sam decides to ask for time off and see what the Brass says. Before she can, however, she is called to a fire in an upscale neighborhood where she finds two people have been bound and burned to death. It now becomes Homicide’s case. The first order of business is to identify the bodies and find the two five-year-old twins who are missing. The FBI becomes involved when it is discovered the family is under their protection and are living under assumed names. When the eldest son, Elijah, is notified, he claims the murderer must be his father’s ex-partner who had threatened the family years before. Meanwhile, the twins are located and are taken home by Sam as she and Nick are foster parents. Although it was sanctioned by Child Services, they didn’t do all the paperwork and steps. Secret Service weighs in telling them that the children cannot stay at the house as they are possibly potential targets. The police weigh in as Sam taking the children in as she is chief investigator on the case creates a conflict of interest. Sam and Nick believe the safest place for the children is with them and are willing to fight to keep the twins.Marie Force sets out to make things difficult for Sam and she does an excellent job of creating obstacles and twists to foul things up. Nothing is clear-cut in this book. She delves into the foster parent system, home invasions, kidnapping, extortion, murder, arson, the Secret Service’s role in protecting public servants, and even opiate addiction. Just as you think things are settling down for Sam and Nick, something comes up to keep the pot boiling. It is a fantastic book and really keeps the reader reading.
