Great phone, bad carrier. Plan B to the rescue!
I needed to switch to Verizon network for reception reasons, and I needed to keep monthly payments in-line with my current service on the "un-carrier". My past experiences with S4 phones have been great and the price is now much lower than the S5, S6 or other new flagship phones. I also like the case and extended batteries available for this model. I got two phones (with nice cases and huge batteries from other sellers) for less than the price of one flagship phone.Other reviews implied that this could be a used item, although I found it listed under "new" on the web site. I have found no sign that the phones were anything less than new. One of the IMEI stickers was more difficult to read, which was a bit worrisome. Software version and everything else implied that it was a genuine SCH-I545. Kies 3 recognized and updated the phones to most recent version and they work fine. The IMEIs were accepted by the BYOD page of Verizon Wireless. They were identified as black instead of white, but I don't know if this is unusual. Unfortunately Verizon doesn't advertise that it requires double the "smartphone access fee" (jumping from $20 to $40/month!) if you bring your own device, which priced the service significantly higher than my un-carrier. This was a deal-breaker for me. Buying a new S5 phone from them was only a few dollars more, so if you are in love with Verizon customer service then that is probably the better way to go. I wanted to keep the monthly payment for my two lines at $90 or less so I was forced to decline.Rather than return the phones in defeat, I am now using Straight Talk CDMA service. The phones activated easily on the web site using kits I picked up at a local brick-and-mortar store after leaving the wireless store. So far no complaints. The service is identified as Verizon on the phone display and service was much more stable on a road trip than the un-carrier has been historically. This is according to my co-pilot who was watching youtube videos the entire 90 minutes.I can confirm the prepaid data throttling rumors. I haven't seen much more than 5 Mb/second on speed tests, which sort of negates the LTE speed advantage. It is still a decent enough speed for almost all functions. On WiFi, speed tests routinely hit 120 just like all the other S4 phones in my household.Ver másVer menos
