My 12 year old son found this book engrossing and gripping
The following book review was written by my 12 year old son. There are some spoilers, so beware. The only thing I'll add to his review is that I have him read a fair bit of historical fiction, and he doesn't love most of it, but this book captured him! Definitely recommend."Brother’s Keeper is an historical fiction novel about a North Korean girl named Sora and her flee from communist Korea. Sora grew up in a small North Korean town where her mother was slightly abusive toward her. Sora’s life is not fun as she is made to cook, clean and care for her two brothers instead of going to school, which is where Sora is always longing to be.One day, when Abahji (Korean for father) is listening to the radio, he hears the announcer yelling, “The evil South Korea have declared war upon the Fatherland.” Despite war, Sora’s family continues with their normal lives, although the they can hear the bombing getting closer and closer. In time, Sora and her father convince Omahni (Korean for mother) to embark upon a journey to Omahni’s sister’s house on the very opposite side of Korea. A few day’s into the trip, Sora and her brother, Youngsoo, get separated from their parents and baby brother. They search and search but cannot find their family. Desperate, Sora decides to go back. Halfway back, they meet a family who tells them there's nobody back farther North. So Sora and Younsoo begin their trek to the train station in Seoul.They barely make it, and Youngsoo is very sick. Sora, now carrying Youngsoo, runs to the train station where the last train is leaving to Busan where her aunt and uncle live. They just make it on the train. After two days of sitting in a room with almost no light and urine everywhere, they arrive and make it to their aunt and uncle's house and find their parents still alive, but Youngsoo is still very sick.When I read this book, I was the same age as Sora. I can’t imagine how hard it would be to cross hundreds of miles alone with my sick brother watching other families die alongside me with nothing to eat and sleeping in abandoned houses. I don’t know how a twelve year old could handle that.I found Brother’s Keeper quite an intriguing book to read. It is full of suspense. I would recommend it to anyone who likes stories of escapes. Although the book is written well, there are certain times when I wish I could throttle the author. The book is very sad and almost a tragedy, so prepare yourself if you're going to read Brother’s Keeper."You know it's a good book when the reader has such strong feelings, LOL; no offense to the author! ;)Ver másVer menos
