Perfect for My Video Game & Entertainment Room — Yamaha Never Disappoints, Can I give it 10 stars?
I installed the Yamaha YHT‑4970U in my video game and entertainment room, and honestly, I couldn’t ask for more. This system fits perfectly in the space, and the sound is absolutely beautiful — refined, clean, and powerful in that classic Yamaha way. I own Yamaha mixers, speakers, and other audio gear, so I already knew what to expect, but this system still managed to impress me.Sound QualityThe speakers deliver rich, detailed audio that fills the room without distortion. The subwoofer isn’t the loudest one I’ve ever used, but it’s more than enough to feel movies, explosions, and video game effects. It adds depth without overwhelming the room. The speakers themselves aren’t tiny, but they’re compact enough to place easily and still produce loud, beautiful sound.Build & DesignThe system looks and feels high‑quality — very Yamaha. The clean, minimalist design blends perfectly with my setup. The cables are long enough for flexible placement, and once everything is connected, the whole system feels premium.Setup ExperienceSetup isn’t exactly plug‑and‑play. You’ll need a bit of patience and some basic DIY confidence. I even had to use wire cutters to prep the speaker wires before connecting them to the receiver. If you plan to mount the speakers, expect a little extra work.But once everything is installed, the payoff is absolutely worth it.Yamaha’s on‑screen menus and YPAO room calibration help a lot, especially if you’re new to receivers. The system supports Dolby Atmos, HDMI eARC, Bluetooth, 4K120, 8K, and has enough HDMI inputs for multiple consoles — perfect for a gaming room.PerformanceMovies, games, and music all sound incredible. You can hear details you simply don’t get from TV speakers. The receiver gives you plenty of control: speaker levels, crossover settings, sound modes, and room correction. Difficult to Set Up, but Sound Quality is Excellent
I had a number of issues getting this set up. We have a non-standard setup with a computer driving a large computer monitor instead of a standard TV.The installation instructions recommend getting some banana jacks for the speaker wires instead of using the screw posts. The speaker connectors have a banana jack on the end and they screw out for inserting the wires directly. The posts are very close together and inserting the wires into the posts is very difficult. The rear speakers are connected to built in wiring and were just barely long enough, getting those into the posts involved a large amount of colorful vocabulary.Once connected, there were a number of issues. On power up the image didn't come up on the monitor. The instructions didn't help, but asking AI indicated unplugging the system and shutting off the monitor, then turning on the monitor followed by plugging the receiver back in. That worked.Then only the front left and right speakers worked and the remote's volume and power buttons didn't work. Again back to AI. The computer's output had to be set to Dolby 5.1 output to get full surround sound. I was able to verify from the computer that all speakers worked except the bass speaker. The bass speaker has it's own power plug and a power switch. The switch was off. Once the bass switch was turned on, all speakers had output.I could turn on the receiver and adjust volume with the controls on the receiver, but not the remote. When it was on and I pushed the power button on the remote I got a message about needing to set Zone B. There is a small slide switch on the side of the remote that switched between Main and Zone B. I didn't initially see it and it was set to Zone B. Once I switched that, the remote worked fine.Now that it's set up, the sound quality is outstanding. For a full system with speakers it's a fairly good price.Yamaha has a reputation for making good quality equipment that is durable, I expect this will hold up for years to come.Ver másVer menos

Make watching movies great again!
I can admit that I'm getting older and my hearing isn't what it used to be. Having said that, I have had a few of these new flat screen HDTVs over the past 10+ years (and yes, my vision isn't what it used to be either because I found myself buying a larger and larger screen, until I finally got glasses...lol). The sound on these new TVs just isn't quality and they are so hard to hear. It's either blasting you out with one sound but you can't hear the words, or you just can't really make out anything. Either way, I'm one of the people who used to really enjoy a good surround sound experience but somehow got away from those systems. When I happened upon this system it allowed me to not only be able to HEAR the movie again, but to pick out and hear small details that the directors/producers/etc. meant for me to hear. It allowed the sound that fills the room to be QUALITY sound. Now, I can really hear what I need to and not sit there wondering if it's just me being half deaf or is everyone having this issue (come to find out, it's not just me, the TVs truly are hard to hear and do not produce quality sound anymore). This system is easy to install, even in our large living room. I'm not much of a gamer, but I did see that it is compatible with many gaming systems, and I can only imagine the quality sounds/experience you might get while playing games. Of course, it came with plenty of speaker wire and everything you'll need to install it and hook it up easily (if you want stands for the speakers or need more than about 80 feet of wire then that would be an extra purchase for you). All in all, I am very impressed with this system, ease of install, quality of sound and ability it has to just make the movie experience great again! Thank you, Yamaha!Ver másVer menos

Sound is great!
I am quite impressed with this surround sound system. I’m glad we made the jump back into surround sound.We had one back in the day when speakers were 3 feet high and subwoofers were as heavy as anchors. This system is nothing like that. The speakers are small and manageable, and it comes with everything you need to set it up, except HDMI cables, but you probably have tons of those.The remote is going to take some getting used to. It’s a little confusing, but nothing that time won’t fix. Do be aware, though that the remote will not work if the setup microphone is plugged in. It took us a little while to figure that out.If you have set up sound systems before this one is pretty straightforward. If you haven’t, they do have plenty of extra help in the form of QR codes in the manual.Now, for the sound. We cranked that baby up as far as my ears could handle, which was not all the way up, and there was no distortion at all. None. Not even the bass.We tried with a movie, and we could hear things we’ve never heard before. It has Bluetooth, so we tried it with Amazon Music. The sound was so much better than listening to it on your phone. OK, maybe that’s not a high bar, but still.The 80 feet of wire was plenty for us. Although if you have a home theater room and it’s quite large, you might need a little bit more. Lay out your room first, where you want the speakers to be. And then figure out if you have enough wire to reach all the speakers.At a mid range price point, this is a decent system for home use. Wow! Great quality for every level of use !
Wow ! We been wanting some kind of sound system. For movies and live sport events but mostly for music. I had to pick this up. It is a complete setup more than I expected. Yamaha quality shine through ! All items well built. Setup was fairly easy. Instructions clear and help if you get stuck. Still learning the smaller details the system can produce. We just love the power and clarity in everything we tested it with. Not being tech music savy it is still easy to use and gives us plenty to adjust to our needs. Our favorite thing is nightly mini concerts. Just using Bluetooth from phone to select tunes it is so easy and we really love the ease to really rock the house. We are so happy with this setup and know how much more we will like it as time wears on and we find more capabilities this system can offer. Nice nice setup and a great value !Ver másVer menos

A budget friendly full 5.1 home theater system.
I am assuming that the reader is either relatively new to the AUDIO VIDEO RECEIVER universe or is just looking for a budget friendly setup. This is the lowest priced complete home theater system including the Yamaha RX300A receiver that is a 5.2 speaker system with 70 watts per channel and 2 subwoofer outlets for self powered subwoofers. The wattage of this receiver will power large speakers and small. The 300A includes a minimalist front chassis with 1 HDMI output and 4 HDMI inputs for a stream box, DVD, BluRay, CD in the back. It includes Bluetooth, DTS, Dolby Atmos and Dolby vision. It offers 7 different sound modes. It doesn’t offer WiFi or more sophisticated sound field processors, so a true surround sound is limited. This set includes 4 small speakers that serve as the front left and right and the rear left and right and each has a tweeter and midrange. The center speaker is for dialogue and consists of 1 tweeter and 2 midrange. There is one 8” self powered subwoofer. These are very small and inexpensive speakers that provide a lower quality sound with the treble being a bit sharp and brassy and the bass being murky due to resonance from vibration of the thin plastic body of the speakers. A newer, higher quality TV can provide better sound quality, but these speakers will give more breadth than cheaper TVs. The AVR can help to correct the speaker problem by adjusting the sound mode or equalizer settings. Fortunately you can adjust the settings and preserve them for each input, then switching between inputs using the 4 scene buttons. Once set up the AVR makes it easy to use the options available. Initial setup, connections, room sound corrections, and operations of the remote consists of many steps, but the instructions are clear, simple and given in stepwise fashion. If you are looking to save money, this is a good option. If you have some extra money, my preference would be to purchase the receiver without these speakers and double the investment in speakers. Over many years of sound system experience, I have kept speakers much longer than receivers, so a bigger investment pays off. Receiver technology improves every few years. I have deducted one star for the speaker system. The receiver deserves 5 stars for its price and performance. I have done a review and video on the receiver alone. Excellent Entry Level Home Theater With Room To Grow
The Yamaha YHT 4970U is a complete home theater package that includes everything needed to get started with true surround sound. Setup is straightforward if you have installed a receiver before, and Yamaha's on screen menus and YPAO room calibration help simplify the process for first time users. It functions great and is compatible with Dolby Atmos, HDMI eARC, Bluetooth streaming, 4K120 and 8K video support, plus enough HDMI inputs for multiple game consoles and media devices. The compact speakers are easy to place around a room without dominating the space, while the powered subwoofer adds solid bass that brings movies, games, and music to life. The receiver also provides plenty of adjustability with customizable speaker levels, crossover settings, sound modes, and room correction, giving you the ability to tailor the sound to your room and personal preferences. Build quality is what I have come to expect from Yamaha, and the included speaker wire and setup microphone get you up and running quickly.
