Simple but useful angle tool
The other reviews have explained how they used these to find angles around their house. I ordered this item to better explain to classes how clinometers work in the sky. No, it's not a clinometer but the angles are easier to read and the simple way I can use the string to show from the horizon to the center and up to the selected angle with help me to show the class a visual of what they are doing with the clinometer and even with a sextant. the tool is wood but it's Birch so it very light. I saw one person's review said it was cardboard. No, not cardboard but it is that same type of wood that is used in some models for planes, etc. I was wondering how easy it would be to navigate using this tool for smaller areas and I think that is where some of the other reviews came in handy since it seems like it would be more useful for larger areas--like planning where a fence would go at a certain angle from the house. When you are using it for larger areas, the size would not be a concern. If you're trying to find the angle of a much smaller area, you might be using smaller angle finders. I do think the quality for good for the amount it cost. I also think it was easy to use (even if I'm not using it exactly as intended.)Ver másVer menos

A Simple Angle Finder That Proves Its Value When You Actually Need It
This is one of those tools that can sit quietly in a shop for months and then suddenly become exactly what a project requires. It is not something I expect to reach for every day, but when I need to lay out an angle over a larger area, guessing is not good enough and doing repeated calculations is slower than it needs to be.There is a small learning curve because the design is so different from a standard protractor or digital angle finder. The basic idea is straightforward once you use it a few times. The string anchors at the center point, stretches toward the direction being measured, and lines up with the engraved degree markings on the wooden body. After a little practice, reading and transferring an angle becomes quick and intuitive.I used it while setting up forms for a cement pad. My main goal was to keep the layout honest as I worked rather than waiting until everything was staked and braced before discovering that something had drifted out of position. The large format made the markings easy to see, and the bright orange line was visible against the forms and ground.It worked very well for establishing the corners and gave me a reliable starting point before I checked the finished layout by measuring diagonally from corner to corner. Only a very slight adjustment was needed after that final check. At this price, every carpenter should have this in his hand tool kit!
This is not a professional instrument! On the other hand, it is a handy little tool and fun as hell!I picked this up because I love simple tools like this. It is well made - easy to read and fairly accurate. My only complaint is that I wish I had made it myself.I recently laid out a new deck for my house and just had to try it out. I set all my posts using this protractor, and I found that the accuracy acceptable for rough carpentry. Just for comparison, I checked all my J-bolt positions with a very expensive laser setup, and they were all in the "good enough" range.Every carpenter should have one of these. At under $15, it is a fabulous old school tool that you should bring out every once in a while, just because you can!!Ver másVer menos

Disappointed in the design. Not practicable. Its cardboard not wood
I was pretty excited to get this because we are putting a brick outline in our backyard. I figured this would really help in getting a straight line. But I was disappointed when I got it to see that its like cardboard. Its not wood like advertised. Its not like box cardboard but it's definitely flimsy. If it got wet, it'd fall apart. Also im honestly not sure how the string is going to stay over on this. Especially because the 2 pieces that stick out on the side are short. Tying it in a knot just causes it to slide off.
