I'm surprised at how much I liked this sunscreen...
I am by no means an expert when it comes to facial sunscreens. I'm pushing 60, and I grew up in the era when slathering yourself with baby oil and a few drops of iodine added in sounded like a great tanning strategy. Looking back... probably not our finest idea.Once daily facial sunscreen became part of modern skincare routines, I tried several over the years but never really stuck with them. I didn't like how they felt, how they smelled, or the way my makeup looked over them. When I came across APRILSKIN Mugwort Calming Sunscreen SPF 50, it sounded different enough that I decided to give it a try.The very first thing I noticed was something I wasn't expecting. It has virtually no scent. I even asked my daughter to smell it because I thought surely I had just become nose blind, but she couldn't detect a fragrance either. That alone was a huge plus for me. I enjoy the smell of traditional beach sunscreen when I'm actually headed to the beach or pool, but I don't want my face smelling like vacation when I'm getting ready for work.I also appreciated the texture. This sunscreen feels much more like a lightweight serum than a heavy cream. It spread easily, absorbed quickly, and didn't leave behind a white cast. It layered nicely over my skincare and wore well under the little makeup I typically wear. One ingredient that was new to me was mugwort leaf water. Since I have redness across my cheeks, I was hopeful it might calm that down. While it didn't noticeably reduce my chronic redness, I learned that mugwort is a popular K-beauty ingredient valued for soothing skin that's temporarily irritated from things like over-exfoliation, retinoids, wind, or sun exposure. Along with mugwort, the formula also contains niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and vitamin E, all of which help support the skin barrier and hydration.I also discovered that people who have allergies to plants in the ragweed/daisy family can occasionally react to mugwort. I do have allergies within that plant family, so I paid close attention when I first used it. Fortunately, despite my sensitive skin, I experienced no irritation, redness, or other adverse reactions. As always, I'd still recommend patch testing any new skincare product before applying it to your entire face.Whenever I try a new skincare product, I first wear it by itself on a day that I'm working from home. If it passes that test, then I try it again as part of my normal skincare routine under makeup. This sunscreen passed both tests with no problems.A little goes a long way, so I expect this tube to last quite a while. My only lingering question isn't really about this product specifically, but facial sunscreen in general. The instructions recommend reapplying every two hours, and I've always wondered how those of us wearing makeup are supposed to accomplish that without starting all over. That's something I still need to learn more about.Overall, this sunscreen was a pleasant surprise. It's lightweight, fragrance-free, comfortable to wear, and gentle enough for my sensitive skin. Seeing my husband and brother-in-law go through multiple skin cancer removals over the years has reminded me that protecting our skin is important. This is one sunscreen I actually don't mind wearing every day, and that's probably the biggest compliment I can give it.Ver másVer menos
