Nice little starter refractometer, actually waterproof.
This LAFMATE refractometer is not bad at all for only about $19.00 USD. The build quality is just a touch cheap feeling, but it mostly shows in the flip open light blocker, which feels like it could break if you have some bad luck dropping it.It generally has a nice feel and a fairly clear to read screen. The waterproof membrane buttons have a nice click to them, the light blocker has a nice clicky feel while locking in place. The battery panel has a proper rubber gasket to keep the AAA batteries safe when rinsing. The battery panel screw hole has a metal threaded insert to ensure it doesn't strip over the years. My last refractometer was much more expensive, advertised as being waterproof, but was clearly NOT, so it's nice to see this cheaper one gets it right.The instructions are fairly clear, though I wish the error codes were printed on the side of the device so you didn't need to consult the manual or memorize them. It needs purified water, preferably distilled water, to calibrate and rinse it. You need to fill the well about 70 percent for a proper reading, so it seems to use up more fluids during a test than my pricier one. For my espresso testing, this is slightly annoying as the shots are already small, but understandable.It warns that vibrations and drops will make it need a recalibration, so it might not be as travel friendly if you cant pack some distilled water with it. It comes with a microfiber cloth to wipe the sensor dry, as well as a very cheaply made dropper. I was surprised that the included batteries were a respectable brand and not some random cheap brand. I really wish this came with a dropper that felt like it would last alongside the device. The dropper is also closed ended, so it may be tricky to clean out.I lack the means to test it's accuracy, but, it does a decent job of giving me the gist of how my coffee extractions are going. I don't know that I would trust a device this cheap for anything serious, but I'm happy with it's feel and operation for such a cheap price, it honestly feels like a good value to me.Ver másVer menos

An essential tool for our kombucha fermentation
This brix meter comes in a nice retail ready shelf box and has a Complete 12 page Owner's manual in multiple languages.We opted to get a brix meter for our kombucha fermentation. I looked over the available options and settled on this one offered through the vine program. I liked that it was digital and offered quick results. Was easy to calibrate and clean using distilled water.They include a little pipette. They are easy enough to keep clean, but we keep disposable pipettes of that size on hand for use in our lab.For kombucha fermentation we need a meter that can measure a minimum of 0-35%. This one fit the bill.With this meter we will be able to monitor the sugar level in our bucha at the various stages of fermentation and will know when to stop the fermentation when we see the sugar level is at our desired level. This helps us keep the brew flavor consistent and avoid it becoming acidic/vinegar tasting.Ver másVer menos

Solid refractometer, super easy to use, no training required
Not much to say about this refractometer, which is great (no complaints at all!)It's super easy to use -- just pop in three (included) AAA batteries, turn it on, place the sample in the well using the included pipette, close the lid, press the "play" icon button, and the reading pops up almost instantly! Other than the power on/off button and the "play" button, theres also a "refresh" button; I'm not sure why they included this 3rd button, it seems like it does the same thing as the "play" button.Unfortunately I misplaced the manual, which would have been useful because sometimes the device gives error codes like E03, E05, E08 which can mean various things like the sample is over 55% brix, or some other problem with the sample. So definitely be sure to keep the manual somewhere safe.I also remember reading about calibration in the manual, except for some reason there were no instructions on how to actually perform the calibration!! Idk how necessary calibration really is though, because I did a few tests of sugar water that I mixed at known concentrations and the brix reading was exactly on point.5/5 for a nice basic refractometer that is super straightforward to use.Ver másVer menos

It works well
This is perfect for testing alcohol content.Super easy to use. You could also use it on beers and wines.Comes with everything you need and thorough.InstructionsI did check the accuracy and it works.It's a lot easier on the eyes also.Create value for the money

Really great tool at a really great price.
I started growing wine grapes a few years ago. They are cold hardy, and can survive in our high elevation environment. We finally have enough to make our own wine and have been supplementing our supply by making about 15 gallons per year. It is easy to tell when the grapes are ripe, but not easy to know the exact sugar content of the juice. I ordered this refractometer to be able to accurately gauge the brix percentage with our grapes. I really like that this one is digital. I have another refractometer that has the scale inside that you line up with the level indicator. It works fine but is difficult for me to get good repeat readings that match up well. This one takes the guess work out of that process. It runs on 3 AAA batteries that are included, along with a great instruction booklet in several languages and a pipette for sampling. The built in 5 minute automatic shutoff is really great and saves battery life. The controls are easy to use and the nice screen has a battery level indicator, and brix readout. This is a really great tool, and the price of $20 is also really great.Ver másVer menos
