Fast and light for productivity tasks
I reviewed the HP Omnibook 3, model 16-by0499nr, with 8GB memory and a 512GB hard drive. For its price this is a good laptop that is acceptable for web browsing, email, word processing and the like. It can easily handle regular productivity tasks for school or work. It would be good for light gaming with entry-level or older games, but more modern games require at least 16GB ram.It has a nice feel, and seems sturdy and well made. The full keyboard, which includes a numeric keypad, has a good feel when typing. It is backlighted which is a huge plus for those of us who arise early and login before turning on the lights. Graphics are very good for the 2K resolution (1920 by 1200) and it has a touchscreen that responds well. The cpu is pretty good. The Ryzen 5 40 cpu benchmarks at 9995 (Passmark score), with a single thread rating at 2592. It has 4 cores and 8 threads, and would be good for normal tasks. You won't be doing major video editing or running modeling software, but daily tasks are fine. With so many things cloud-based now, there's not a great need for powerful cpus except for specific tasks (like gaming or local AI). The product description claims over 14 hours of battery life, but I estimate that it is not near that. I used up about 50% in about 3-4 hours, which would give it about 5-8 hours, but I was doing the install and testing with heavy use that entire time, so moderate usage may make it last longer. Even so, that's better than my current laptop by far.Microsoft has removed the option during setup to install without WiFi and a Microsoft account, but you can get around this if you search for the method (Alt <F10> to open a CMD window and then some commands) if you are worried about privacy. The installed software takes up about 55GB of hard drive space, but memory usage is minimal, so the 8GB provided is fine. I understand that the memory cannot be upgraded, as it is soldered onto the board, but I don't know about the hard drive. From first power-up to being able to open a browser and surf the net took me about 1 minute of setup and 10-15 minutes of waiting around for updates - about average.Ver másVer menos
