Better than I expected it to be (I'm leveraging Rockbox on it)

Background : I have a lot of MP3 players, always seem to be reaching for something better for my pretty large (50k) lossy collection of mostly Vorbis files. And I've been a Rocbox user for many years now. This one piqued my interest due to the scroll wheel and the support already for Rockbox. Prime Day purchase and honestly I didn't spend too much time testing the original firmware.....got as far as testing gapless playback (the software doesn't support it - usually a dealbreaker for me) and then immediately moved onto Rockbox. What i didn't expect however is 1) the pretty extensive grassroots effort with Rockbox right now, including support within the vendor's actual firmware upgrade tool and 2) that Bluetooth actually works within Rockbox itself. Installation was extremely easy although keep in mind I am experienced with that software already.Gapless, on Rockbox, of course works and, at least with my testing so far, Bluetooth also working without any stutters or drops. Battery life I haven't fully tested but even if its half of the 25 hour rating that's still pretty darn good. I also like the tactile "thump" with the clickwheel usage - it's a small add to the player but I like it. The speaker supplied isn't great but it does its job well enough. Think "old AM radio", good for background usage.Sound quality. Again I didn't spend too much time in the original firmware but it wasn't terrible. A lot of this depends on your headphones and, as I expected, some of my cans were better than others. Rockbox of course improved things as I already have EQ settings I'm used to and ported over to the device. But for a device this cheap I think it's good bang/buck, I was never expecting audiophile quality.Screen is also better than I expected, on a player this cheap. Still a bit washed out in sunlight (can't really be helped) but inside the viewing angles are good. I didn't test the video playback but I suspect the screen itself will be adequate. And then lastly the storage options. I had already read online that there is a microSD card inside the player and that can be replaced, for those willing to use a bit of elbow grease. And I an confirm the same - I bought the cheapest 64GB player purposely as I know these built-in cards are usually very low quality.Just be aware that it is not easy to open this thing and I'm experienced with iPhones and iPods past and have a number of tools. I finally managed it once I realized not so much to press at an angle versus using a guitar pick and more "slicing" through the gap, to release each tab. And obviously its a warranty killer but once I realized the pros of this thing I wasn't planning on returning it anyway.Couple of cons:- The microSD on the inside of the unit. Hopefully their next player will fix that. :)- It does feel a bit cheap. All plastic and light weight, much lighter than my iPod 5G. Btw, it's a tad smaller than that iPod.- USB transfer is definitely a bit slower than it should be, and I was using direct USB-C from my PC on this. Feels more like USB 2.0 speeds but at least that's more of a "one-time" situation for my main audio transfers. I had almost considered opening the device again to transfer to the microSD directly. 300GB or so took over 8 hours for me. Ouch.Overall though....I like it a lot. It's a keeper.Ver másVer menos

  I love it sm

I don’t usually post reviews, I bought this on a whim and I have to say I don’t enjoy this little mp3 player. I grew tired of streaming music and missed my mp3 players and I do have to say this was worth it. While the headphones it comes with do have the radio attachment, the quality wasn’t the greatest so I swapped them for another pair and it’s better. It fits a large amount of songs, and I just discovered I can set a wallpaper. As someone who loves listening to music this mp3 player lets me put my phone down and just listen to music. It’s not difficult to use and the speaker in the device isn’t the greatest but it’s also not the worse. I do recommend using headphones or a Bluetooth speaker. Definitely worth the purchase.Ver másVer menos

freezing screen, poor wire headphone/speaker jack... Think twice.

I normally do not give a written review, but in this case, I had to, this device is so poor and there is so much hype online about how good it is I had to write how disappointed I was with it. I bought this 64GB unit for a gift for someone and a 128GB for myself. But after setting up my unit and using it I was not happy and returned the 64GB unit, keeping my 128GB as I used it, not even stress testing it as it failed normal use...This device is very overrated; I had bigger expectations then it delivered. 1- The unit felt very light almost like it was going to break in my hands, fragile is a good word for it. 2- After I loaded my music on it (which was very easy) the playback wired to a speaker was poor, the sound was okay, but the unit would just stop playing after 7-10 songs and I had to reboot the unit as the screen would have gibberish on it and the dial would start to malfunction trying to scowl songs. 3- The ear jack is so poor that if you just shake the wire moving it around the sound cuts out to a speaker and with headphones one side or the other would cut out or cut out completely. At times it felt like it was going to break with constant removing and reinstalling a wired jack to a headset. 4- when I had it in my pocket even walking with in my house the unit would stop working or the music would cut out if using a wired headset. I wish the reviews online where more honest about the unit as I felt I wasted my time and money. For the average user 64GB is very sufficient for storing MP3 songs on a unit of this type, bigger memory is not always needed unless you use large file type. I did a lot of research beforehand, maybe I should have done a lot more. I never tested the Bluetooth due to my poor response to wired devices and the crashing and freezing of the player, I think when you have too many files it cannot handle the shuffle. It looks nice, has that a nostalgic look but that's as far as it goes. I found better unit here on Amazon and am happy with them.Ver másVer menos

new iPod! Some downsides, but almost all great!

Not perfect, but pretty close. This thing is so close to being my perfect iPod replacement. The storage size is crazy good, the ease of adding music onto it is also great. I just wish the dial felt better, and it would sort easier for albums under an artist(might be something I could figure out, not a huge deal). If you want a semi retro iPod style device this is it. The headphone jack, usb-c, and Bluetooth lets it interface modern accessories but keeps that older feel. I’ll probably get a couple for colors for fun, but the onboard speaker is passable at best and the plastic build quality is fine. If they made a more premium edition with metal and a better dial I would pay more for it easily. I found the dial sound pretty bad, but there is a setting for vibration that isn’t perfect but way better. It sounds like I have a lot of complaints, which I kinda do, but it does everything well practically, my complaints are small compared to how well it does the rest. The Bluetooth sounds fine, the headphone jack sounds good as well, nothing super high fi, but for the price I was pleasantly surprised. No one else makes anything like this at this quality or ease of use, I recommend it.Ver másVer menos

Player is ok if it works. Customer service is horrible if it doesn't!

Sounds and plays fine. I can't turn it off to save power. It reboots everytime i try to turn it off! I have to keep it plugged in 24/7 when not in use incase i want to use it. I contacted Innioasis before 30 days were up. They had me update the firmware twice. It didn't fix the problem either time. They said they would send me a replacement. That was 3 months ago. I never received a replacement! Mp3 player is ok if it works. Customer service is horrible if it doesn't!Ver másVer menos

  iPod Classic on a Budget

I love this thing. I was able to import my FLAC library onto it. It sounds pretty good. I was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting a thinner cheaper sound but this was better than I expected. I was considering getting a modded iPod classic and came across this product during my research. For the price I figured I would give it a shot and I absolutely love it.The UI takes some getting use to. The stock software wasn’t too bad. I was able to download skins for it which instantly gave me the iPod nostalgia vibes I was looking for. I definitely recommend still using rock box software with it.The construction of the device is definitely more plastic but lighter than an iPod as a result. I will say the click wheel on this is great. The closest thing to the real thing I’ve tried. I’ve purchased iPod dupes in the past and the click wheel wasn’t a functional wheel. This one is great and makes me engage with the music more than just listening on my phone. It’s a great device to write with or to just unplug and go for a run and play basketball. I use it with my Sennheiser HD 58x jubilee’s open back headphones and my Moondrop Chu II IEM’s those two headphone combination with this device sounds good. I also love using it in my car connecting it via USB. I’m quite happy with my purchase it’s great value for the money.Ver másVer menos

The best player for avoiding the Android music player feel is... an Android music player!?

For a while now I've been looking for a music player that captured that peak early to mid-2000s feel I grew up with, so more than anything, Rockbox support is what sold me on this device. I'd played around with it long ago on my 5th gen iPod Video, and it was pretty cool. Impressive, then, to see a device that so openly supported a community made software effort. Even more impressive is learning that all the support and porting effort and even software tools for this device is not just community-made, but officially condoned by the manufacturer. Innioasis have taken the bold and honestly genius approach of letting the community basically take the device they created and turn it into what they wanted most, and the result is genuinely impressive. This is a music player with custom firmware mods, flashing tools available even on Linux, and a host of quirky UI skins. In supporting the community rather than fighting them, this brand you've probably never heard of has cultivated a device with a community support the likes of which you only really see on extremely popular smartphones and tablets, and it's a much better device for it. If you're here for any other reason than this, it might not be the device you really want, but I'll get to that. The overall form factor of the device takes some pretty obvious inspiration. It's small, deceptively light, feels a bit flimsy, but gets the job done. The screen is fairly bright and clear, not super high resolution but really it doesn't need to be for this kind of device. The device runs Android 4.2.2 (at least the Rockbox port does, I didn't check the official firmware, but I'm assuming it's similar), but only in the sense that Android is the vehicle upon which an entirely custom interface is built for the device. It's stripped down about as much as you can strip down Android, and as a result works pretty well. It gets decent battery life, runs fairly snappy even on this very lightweight hardware, and is probably the entire reason this device has the community support that it does. In other words this is kind of like an Android music player done right, rather than just being a stripped-down smartphone with no cellular radio. There was actual work put in here, and Android was just a means of interfacing with cheap and readily-available hardware. The interface, too, takes some pretty obvious inspiration. If, like me, you carried around one of those incredibly popular little silver-backed nuggets in the 2000s you'll feel pretty well at home here, with a few caveats that I'll get to in a bit. Most things work about how you'd expect, with the added bonus that you can customize them a bit more. Both the stock and Rockbox firmware support custom skinning, though I was a bit unimpressed with most of the stock options. That said, I wanted Rockbox anyway, so most of my experience will refer to that, and on that front the sky is kind of the limit with how much you can do, especially if you're willing to get your hands a little dirty. Rockbox in general is something that you could honestly write a whole review about itself, so I'll refer you to its documentation if you're curious what it can really do, but the summary is that you can tweak and twiddle enough things to really hone this device into as close to exactly what you want that the hardware itself allows. So why 3 stars, then? Well, in my opinion there's a lot of missed potential here. While the buttons are fine, and fairly tactile, the wheel itself is very clunky. It doesn't have the responsiveness of the device that it so obviously wants you to compare it to, and I can't help but feel that should've been a pretty solvable issue, even on inexpensive hardware. Fixing that alone would honestly probably lift my rating to 4 stars. Also, considering that the device merely uses a microSD card internally, it seems pretty silly that they didn't just give you access to it at the start (something they did in fact remedy with the follow-up device to this one). Thankfully the device is held together only with clips, so you can get at it and replace it with something bigger if you want, but it's silly that you need to. Lastly, while I'm no audiophile, I just get the impression that the actual audio hardware in here, the DAC and amp powering this device, are probably not the greatest. They don't sound bad, there's no hiss or anything, but they're using a pretty mediocre Mediatek SoC in here, and while that's fine performance-wise, it's most likely paired with similarly-mediocre audio hardware. Which, you know, fair for this price, but honestly I wouldn't mind spending more for a device with better audio chops and this same interface and community support. There are a few other minor issues, mostly arising from the lack of extremely tight software-to-hardware support you get with pairing Android and Rockbox with a device like this. Things like easily changing tracks while the device is in your pocket, and how hold functionality works without a physical hold-switch, but those are all honestly pretty forgivable here. For the price it's a decent, even really cool device. I honestly like it way more than I thought I would, but this is one of those very rare circumstances that I actually wish it was a more expensive device, with perhaps a bit better fit-and-finish, nicer audio hardware, nicer scroll-wheel, but the same amazing community support and software. Then it would be an easy recommendation from me.

  Cute and fun MP3 player/clone wannabe…

I’m having fun with my Innioasis mp3 player! It has a retro feel as a imitation (in appearance) to an iPod classic. The case is plastic and light though I am okay with this. The inner workings are more modern than iPod though. It has Bluetooth capabilities and charges with a USB-C. It also uses a click-wheel response like its mentor. One can purchase a 64 or 128gb player, and there are a variety of colors. The sound isn’t blow-your-mind amazing, but it is adequate. It isn’t perfect, but it does fit my needs and tastes without spending $300+ for old, discontinued technology. I like it so much that I purchased one for a good friend.I haven’t had it long enough to test longevity, but Bluetooth works, radio tunes in reasonably well, and battery does last for several days after about six hours of daily usage. It was worth the cost, in my opinion, and if it broke or failed, I would purchase again.Ver másVer menos

  Great little player.

This little player is very close to the iPod experience in all ways. The audio is great, even out of the speaker, and it played all of my files without a glitch. The only issue I found is the scroll wheel, and it's a bit touchy when going round. Not terrible but it does take a bit of getting used to. Basic menus and functions are all easy to understand and work with. Plenty of storage for most people I would think. I'm about 1/2 full with a combination of ape and mp3 files and that adds up to about 3800 files right from the albums. I could probably get rid of 1/2 of those if I was to currate the collection a little bit and that would leave lots of new space. The unit is a little plasticy, not surprising, but does have a nice feel in the hand. You should probably get a screen protector as it is a little flexible and only time will tell how durable it is going to be. The manual is fairly easy to follow and there are a lot of features that this unit provides that I won't be using yet (lyrics, audiobooks, etc) but it's nice that they are there for those that want to use them. If you are looking for a new or replacement audio player this should be one of the ones you invest in. I've given this a 5 star report because the things that aren't "perfect" don't bother me at all and because at this price point I'm not expecting perfection. Well worth the money spent.Ver másVer menos
