Great power, easy installation

(note - this is not a "vine" review, I purchased this laser)Short version - the LaserTree K20 Pro is impressive in all aspects. Unboxing: The K20 packaging is minimalist, clean and well organized. It gives the impression of "high end". The laser module itself is in a static-safe bag, the extra protective lens is in a small plastic box - not a baggie and not loose in the box. The manual continues the impression of high end, information is organized well, images are crisp, wording is clear and done well (i.e. no glaring spelling or grammar errors). I expected the P-DA-20 Driver Adapter board to be a bare board like other hobbyist electronics - it was not, it has protective acrylic covers on metal stand-offs, not only on top of the board but on bottom too (a high-end touch).Installation is straight forward - mount the laser and driver adapter board, connect a couple cables and go. See below for some notes on installation.My only comparison for performance is the 5.5w laser that is being upgraded. The added power of the K20 Pro lets me run a job at higher speed and lower power to achieve similar results. It also lets me engrave and cut materials the 5.5w laser would not touch. Cutting black acrylic is easy. Engraving stainless steel (such as kitchen knives) also works well.------Though it is not really the right place for such details, it is a place where people will find it, so... I'll capture some installation and operation info that I was not able to find before I purchased - it will hopefully help others who are considering buying this module. Installation: I'm using the K20 to upgrade my Genmitsu LC60A engraver. The engraver came with a 5.5w Sainsmart laser module which runs on 12vdc. The new K20 module needs 24vdc so I'll be using the P-DA-20 Driver Adapter board and the 24vdc power supply that comes with the K20 Pro kit.First step was to remove the existing laser and driver board then physically mount the new laser and driver board. Connecting the new module was a 2-cable, plug-and-play step for my setup. The P-DA-20 Driver Adapter board has several different input connectors to support a variety of cabling options - one of the connectors matches the 3-pin from my controller box. The second cable comes with the kit and goes between the P-DA-20 and the K20 laser module. The air assist hose from my existing engraver plugs directly into the top of the K20 module.The K20 module is physically larger than the Sainsmart module so I adjusted the limit switch stopper at the front of the machine to ensure the gantry doesn't crash when moving to that limit. I adjusted the Y-axis dimension in LightBurn to reflect the shorter travel distanceThere are a few things that are not explained well (or at all) - here is what I found:* The P-DA-20 Driver Adapter board has a connector labeled "DC 24V output for Air Pump". Even though it is labeled "output" it may be used as a power input depending on the connector of the power cord supplied with the kit. * This is in the manual, but I overlooked it so maybe you did too. To focus the unit for engraving - put the "kickstand" down to the 0mm position, lower the module until the kickstand just touches the material face, then raise the kickstand out of the way. This positions the laser to be focused on the material surface. It also means there is only 8mm clearance between the material and the bottom of the module. I found that an 8mm spacer block is easier to manipulate than the kickstand. For cutting thick material, you'll use one of the other kickstand settings.* The over temperature switch is identified but not explained. The button seems to be an on/off toggle but there is no physical difference and no indicator light to determine which state it is in. The manual says the over temperature alarm activates at 55*C. I've never seen the temperature display go higher than about 25*C.* The red crosshair line is a bit obscured by the module itself. Its operation is not documented, I found that it turns off when the laser turns on (for the fire button, for framing and for burning). The red cross does not turn back on automatically when the laser goes off. The cross does turn back on when I move the laser module in the Z direction - it seems like there must be a sensor in the module to detect Z-axis movement.Ver más
