Very well written down to earth
Great book. I could relate to the story. Looking forward to reading anything by Belle Burden in the future. I read this book in 3 days. Very good reading.

Anger, Reflection, and Resilience
Strangers: A Memoir of Marriage was one of those books that completely pulled me in. I felt Belle’s anger, confusion, and heartbreak as her world was turned upside down, but what stayed with me most was watching her gradually find her footing and reclaim her voice.What I appreciated most was the honesty in her storytelling. While it would have been easy to paint herself solely as a victim, she also reflects on her own role within the marriage and moments she wishes she had handled differently. One example that stood out to me was her reflection on a couples’ trip, where she felt excluded by the other women and later examined her own perceptions of the situation. Those moments of self-awareness added depth and credibility to her story.I was also struck by how her ex-husband seems to move through life as though nothing he did was wrong. It’s both infuriating and fascinating, especially because so many of us know people who operate that way. Belle captures that frustration so well.Another aspect I admired was her willingness to look beyond her own privilege and acknowledge that profound loss and betrayal can upend anyone’s life, regardless of circumstances. Her vulnerability made the memoir feel deeply human and relatable.Overall, this was a powerful, thoughtful, and incredibly well-written memoir. I’m glad Belle had the courage to tell her story. An excellent memoir of marriage…
Belle Burden was living a charmed life. She was an attorney turned happily married mom of three with an apartment in NYC, and a vacation home on Martha’s Vinyard. She came from wealth and she enjoyed privileges that most people only dream of. Until the day her husband blindsided her with the devastating confession that he was having an affair and wanted out of the marriage. No explanation. No apologies. And to add insult to injury, he was leaving her on Martha’s Vineyard with their three kids during the COVID 19 pandemic and heading back to NYC. Devastated and confused, Belle spent the days, months and subsequent years ahead rebuilding her confidence, revisiting her dream and reframing her life into something she could not have imagined had her husband not abandoned her.First, I want to say that this book was beautifully written despite the subject matter. Belle Burden is an excellent writer and I thoroughly enjoyed this memoir of her marriage. It left me with a host of emotions including heartbreak, sadness, bewilderment, inspiration and hope. The tone is not one of a bitter ex-wife writing a book vilifying her cheating husband. It’s her honest account of the life she shared with a man she thought she knew, and the aftermath of his betrayal. She recounts events leading up to their meeting and marriage, as well as the complicated familial relationships and behaviors that existed on both his side of the family and hers. There were traumas. When the book ended I was haunted by the prospect that a man who seemed to have nothing but love for his wife and family could one day walk away. I think Belle’s husband had childhood trauma that he failed to address, coupled with a midlife crisis on steroids. But that’s just my opinion. I’m no doctor. 🙂Read it.Ver másVer menos

An Emotional Read with Lessons to Consider
The book was engaging from the get go. I had gone through my own divorce and could relate. It was a cathartic read for me.I gave 4 stars because, while a great read that I would recommend, and well written, I didn't think it was at a 5-star level in terms of subject and writing style. But very well done.I found at times myself getting annoyed with the author for things she did along the way in her marriage...for being either naive or too trusting or both. But that is also coming from my world experiences. And I do hope others take from this her learnings.I enjoyed the parallel she draws with the osprey. That added an extra level of interest and it added to the Vinyard feel.Of course, I have no regard for her husband James but that being said, I do remind myself that there is always two sides of a story and this is just one side. Somewhere in between lies the truth.And there are the children who are always affected by divorce. More difficult to understand the impact to them but that is their story to tell. The author handled that well - just enough but not invasive.Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in memoirs about marriage, divorce, and personal healing.Ver másVer menos

Raw, Honest and Beautifully Told
I absolutely loved this book. Belle Burden writes with such honesty and emotion that I felt every pain, every hope, and every heartbreak alongside her. She has a wonderful way of drawing the reader into her world, and I often felt as though I was walking in her shoes. A beautifully written memoir that I won’t forget.Ver másVer menos
