Reliable and Convenient
Our household is divided between two different corporations’ smart home platforms. This works with both, and with Tapo’s app, in case you’d prefer to avoid the big boys. This is a company name we were familiar with, having used networking and security equipment from this brand for a few years at work, so we felt confident that the product and company wouldn’t vanish from existence, if we had questions or issues. There were no issues. Plugged it in, opened the Tapo app, and the app popped up saying a device has been found, and would I like to add it. Yes, please. The app walked me through everything, easy peasy, and we now have outlets named for what is plugged into them. Each outlet has it’s own on/off button with a green light to show when it is powered, plus a button and status light on the cord end, in case you want to shut off power to the whole strip quickly. The status lights can be disabled or scheduled, so they are off while you sleep. The three USB ports do not have their own power button(s) or light(s), and were not listed when adding the power strip, therefore the USB ports are not “smart,” and can’t be controlled via app or voice control, which was slightly disappointing, as I have a USB light with a toggle switch that I can’t reach. I’m not docking stars for this, because the USB ports were an afterthought in my case, and were not why we purchased this power strip. The various electronics plugged into this power strip can now be turned off or on by voice control, time of day, room temperature/humidity, or remotely by app, because we already had hubs/speakers and some sensors. We can also see how much power each item uses, which made it easier to decide what size of backup battery was needed to power a home office during outages. When there is a storm warning, individual outlets, or the whole power strip can be turned off via app, even if no one is home. One household member has a vision impairment, and has found it liberating to use voice commands to turn things on/off via this power strip. The router, which is impossible to reach without digging a ladder out of the closet, can now be hard reset via app or voice command when it misbehaves. If one of us thinks we forgot to turn off a particular item when we left the house, we can check and turn it off remotely. Because I had previously added a Tapo smart bulb and connected the Tapo app to the two Big Boys’ smart home apps, this power strip became available on those apps, as well. The Tapo app is useful, but is designed for all of their products, which could make it somewhat confusing to use at first. I don’t think you NEED to use their app, but it works well. For us, these Tapo power strips are worth it, and have restored some freedom/confidence to household members with declining vision & mobility.Ver másVer menos
