Read before you "upgrade"...

I've never had an Echo Show 8, so I bought the 3rd Gen (2023) at a big discount while waiting for the new 2025 model to come available. I'm really glad I had some time with the 2023 3rd Gen because I think it is superior in most ways... and the things that really needed improvement (touch screen, UI) were not noticably better in the new model. Additionally, my brand new one shipped with a microphone error that is apparently a long-standing hardware issue on previous gen models. (REALLY!?)Here are my chief complaints:-Sound: Gen 4 (2025) was a noticable downgrade in sound quality, especially at increased volume. The 3rd Gen can be cranked to the max with little distortion, but the 4th Gen has buzzy highs and a diminished bass response by comparison. To be fair, neither are the "room filling" sound they claim to be, but the 2023 3rd Gen was somewhat better for a big, open room.- Camera - the switch is gone! My guess is because they want to keep that camera on for ever more data collection, but I like to flip the shutter closed on our bedroom devices and in our common areas when we have visitors. Yes, there are various options to cover it yourself, but it's the principle behind the design change. And yes, you can turn the camera off in the software settings, but nothing is as trusty as an opaque covering.- All the hardware buttons were moved to the side, making them harder to see and use. This is a matter of preference and would be less bothersome with continued use, but it is different from other echo show devices (we also have three 5-inch models).- UI: the screen interface is apparently unchanged and unfortunately, still lacking. This is mostly a software thing, but if they are going to refresh a device, you would expect some improved functionality. Alas, you are still forced to endure laggy screen swipes and menus that somehow have the same crowded feel of the 5-inch device. I have read the processor was improved to take advantage of Alexa+, but so far it is definitely slower to respond to voice commands.- Plug: believe it or not, plugs designed for the 3rd Gen WILL NOT work with this device. Yes, they are both 30 watt and yes, both plugs will fit both devices, but the 4th Gen Echo Show will not even turn on using a 3rd Gen plug. Why?! This kind of thing should be ubiquitous (and USB-C) by now.Stand - in keeping with changing accessories for no apparent reason other than taking more of your money, the stand designed for a Gen 3 WILL NOT work with a Gen 4. Yes, they are both magnetic and yes, they are pretty much the same size, but the Gen 4 has a different shape. Shameless!Looks: This one is another matter of preference, but the Gen 4 just looks awkward to me... It's essentially the latest Echo Dot with a Fire Tablet stuck on the side. I much prefer the 3rd Gen, which has a cleaner homogeneous quality, kind of like a miniature vintage TV set. The new screen is apparently "improved," but I honestly can't see any apparent change.Errors: How a brand new design ships with known microphone issues that plagued older devices is beyond me. The microphone just mutes itself at random. I've tried everything... software settings, unplug, reboot, reset... Nothing works. And there are no apparent triggers. Sometimes it stays on for awhile and sometimes it mutes right after talking to the device. Again, new device with a not new issue... Makes you wonder what other legacy issues are lurking inside unfixed.Those are the specifics, but in general it's a 1-star review because of Amazon's complete lack of true innovation. I have been a Prime subscriber and avid user of nearly all Amazon devices since the very first Echo (which still works and sounds better than this Echo Show 8). The problem for several years now is their devices are advertised as "new and improved" but the reality is components and functionality that hasn't improved the user experience for many years. I quit buying Fire tablets (for my kids) in favor of iPads several years ago. I have since quit buying Fire TV devices in favor of Roku and AppleTV. My last holdout has been the Echo devices, which so far hasn't been bested in value... But after my experience with the new Echo Show, I'm afraid their replacement time is also near.

I like it, but it needs refinement. -read review.

The sound quality is great, Alexa is quick to respond to my commands and is the most faithful and smartest girlfriend I've ever had. She's great at reminding me of things I ask her to.My recipe library is amazing now.I don't let her camera see anything yet and keep tape over her eye (I'm very camera shy). It's great at keeping notes for me and recalling them with just a date, name or number.It's amazing to be able to listen to radio stations from all over the world with just a simple request like "Alex, Play KZOZ, or Alexa, Play BBC 1, and linking my Broadcastify account in the Skills lets me listen to some local police and fire stations. It's weather alerts, link to my homes Lorex CCTV system and smart devices have made life seem safer and way too convenient.I like the way it sits solidly on flat surfaces and think the Echo Show 11 is a quality build with a quality super bright screen. She's a bit glitchy at times with the touch screen and is more responsive to voice commands and is the only reason she gets 4 stars.It's especially helpful in my electronics repair hobby or learning anything about our world or electronic devices.It's been very helpful in resolving technical problems, personal problems, and even obscure things like paring wines with various foods, or educating me on vertically anything. It watches over my elderly father and notifies me if he needs assistance. She's just the right fit for my nightstand and with her ambient sound app provides wonderful music for sleep or meditation. She can control my new TCL TV but its limited to just on and off or volume control.In my spare time we collaborate on research I'm dong in Ufology and her knowledge in this field is incredible.I like the way she can show me images of things I ask her to show me like works of art, electronic components, antiques, design, or almost everything.UPDATE: 7-29-2026A big disappointment when I purchased a compatible security camera system to use it with. After setting it up with Alexa’s help the camera stream looks horrible. It cuts video streaming resolution to about 20%. It looks horrible compared to my phone app which shows the native camera resolution of 2k or 1440p. Lots of time trouble shooting with no improvement.10/12/2026 Update: Alexa on my Echo Show 11 has started hearing requests that I didn't make. In a silent room with no noise it stated, "Based on your love for Ruben apples and air fryer cooking I found some recipes that might hit the spot". When I asked Alexa what prompted it to state that message it's response was, "You made the recipe request at 9:42 AM today". I did not make that request and the room was totally silent at that time. This has happened before, but I always thought it was just misinterpreting noise or the TV sound. I'm beginning to think it's hearing ghosts in my home or dreaming.It's knowledge in cooking time and temperatures or substituting ingredients in recipes is impressive. I really love the ability to create custom recipes with photos that I can upload using the Alexa app, and now have an extensive library I can access instantly that rivals by best cook books.Navigating the Alexa app to make changes to various settings and functions is required, however when asking Alexa how to navigate the settings in the Alexa app it always misdirects me as if it doesn't know the layout of the specific app for my mobile device. Alexa should know the exact version of the app I'm using, but doesn't, indicating a disconnect of sorts between the app and my echo devices.I am unable to find the date my Echo Show 11 software was updated. In the device settings under updates it shows OS Version 1.3 1574/7 with no verifiable updates since the unit was shipped on 9/30/2025. When checking for updates it shows no updates available. And it does need updates.One of the worst things I noticed is there is no way to hold open a screen while talking to Alexa and some screens timeout or have no way to prevent timeouts in settings and and other screens.It's difficult to use the Echo Show 11 with the Alexa app open while asking questions about the app because they both respond to verbal questions blocking what I'm trying to read in the app or on the Echo Show.The Echo Show 11 tries really hard to be engaging when conversing with Alexa, so much so, that when I say, "Alexa, you ask too many questions" I always get the same response which is, "Thanks for letting me know, I'll try to dial it back" but it doesn't. Some questions Alexa asks in conversations I find intrusive. For example, when I ask about a specific location or business it may ask, "Are you planning a trip there anytime soon?", and I find it strange that knowing what I purchase on Amazon it doesn't know my name and has asked many times, "Who am I speaking to?"On many occasions I've noticed it transcribing audio from my TV or radio. When asked why it was listening and transcribing it says it's not, and that doesn't listen to the TV or radio while the proof is on the screen.
