A delightful book - thoughtful, insightful, captivating
What a delightful surprise this book turned out to be!!!The Correspondent is unlike anything I've read recently. It's thoughtful, insightful, and quietly captivating. Rather than relying on dramatic twists, it draws you in through beautifully developed characters and the gradual unfolding of their lives.Sybil is a fascinating protagonist. As the story progresses, there's an underlying thread of curiosity about what experiences, especially the loss of her son, shaped her into the person she became. That question lingered throughout the novel and kept me eagerly turning the pages.Virginia Evans writes with grace and authenticity, creating a story that is both intimate and emotionally resonant. I couldn't put it down.After I finished the book, I was delighted to discover that Virginia Evans is from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, close to where I live. I had no idea when I picked up the novel, and it made me appreciate this remarkable debut even more. Kudos for crafting such a beautifully written and refreshingly original novel. A different kind of novel
This novel sounded very interesting by most of the reviews. I decided to give it a go and judge for myself. Sybil pulls you right into her world with her variety of letters to friends, family, authors and such. Who knew you could “read” a bunch of letters and enter someone’s life.I’ve always have been a fan of the handwritten letter. It’s so personal and sometimes such a nice surprise for those not expecting it.I’ve often tried to purchase personal diary’s and letters from EBay as a novel gift or touch of decor in my home but most are either out of my budget or not very authentically written. (You can tell very easily). Reading this book has sort of made me happy to be able to get my hands on something in the meantime.Excellently written, no flattened words: in fact, it left me wanting more!Can’t wait to see this come to life in a movie!Ver másVer menos

Highly Recommended
THE CORRESPONDENT is written by Virginia Evans.It is an epistolary novel.This term is used in literature to describe a story telling format where aplot/story unfolds through correspondence, rather than 3rd-person narration.This style creates an intimate, first-person perspective - the reader feels asthough they are eavesdropping on a character’s personal thoughts.Sybil Van Antwerp spends her mornings writing letters - letters to friends,family, local university officials, authors, neighbors, businesses. This is theway, the manner, in which she communicates with others.Sybil expects her world to go on as it always has - as a mother, a grandmother,wife, divorcee, distinguished lawyer, friend - she has lived a very full life.When letters from someone in her past force her to examine one of the mostpainful periods in her life, she realizes that a letter she has been ‘writing’for years needs to be read and she cannot move forward until she finds itin her heart to offer forgiveness.I was swept off my feet by this book.Sybil is a dynamic, wonderful character. Her letters are so thoughtful,interesting, charming, cranky, funny, happy, sad and full of life.I would highly recommend this book. *****Ver másVer menos

The Magic of the Lost Art of Letter Writing Lingers Long After the Final Page
The Correspondent is a novel that reminds you why letters once held people together. What makes the novel exceptional is its voice. Sybil’s letters felt so real, I'd forget I was reading fiction. Through her correspondence with friends, family, and one unnamed recipient, the story builds a layered portrait of a woman who has lived, lost, loved, and still refuses to soften her edges. I ordered the novel for my kindle, but I also had the opportunity to listen to it which added a whole new dimension to the experience. Hearing the characters’ voices, emotions, pauses, and tone made it incredibly easy to connect with them on a deeper level. Instead of just reading about their struggles and relationships, I felt them. The audio brought out personality traits making each character more vivid and relatable. Their motivations made more sense, their flaws felt human, and their choices felt grounded in real emotion. Ultimately, The Correspondent is a standout for readers who love character-driven stories, older protagonists, and the intimate magic of letters. Wonder and Awe
What a lovely story. Easy to read and beautifully developed. I now feel the need to write a letter! Thank you for the lovely lens into what aging can be, harrowing and dark at times, but filled with sparkling lights of hope and reconciliation.

Mixed feelings all around, but “good” overall
This feels less like a novel and more like a messy collection of subplot stories in the late stages of a person’s life.On the one hand, that makes it difficult to tell a cohesive story. On the other hand, that’s how real life is.It’s not easy to tell a good (or even decent) story via a series of letters and I was skeptical Virginia Evans was going to pull it off, especially with the mess of subplots and especially with how often I got bored and chose to read other books instead.By the end though, I would say she generally pulled it off. The overall structure is imperfect, especially with the mess of subplots, some of which go unresolved and end up feeling like unnecessary distractions, but it (the overall structure) is there.The main character is another “on the one/other hand” situation. At times, she seems like a sweet old lady you can’t help but have endearing feelings toward. At others, you’re like “wow, she really just said that?” Some readers will take issue with this dichotomy, but to me, it’s another thing that makes it feel “real.” After all, aren’t our grandparents and aging parents just like that?The tail end of her arc feels a little rushed, but even that I find to be somewhat “realistic” for someone in the late stages of their life with failing health.Overall, I’d say it’s a “good” book, one that I have a hard time choosing a rating for. Definitely lower than 5 stars. Definitely higher than 2 stars. Let’s go with a soft 4, or a 3.5 rounded up or something.Ver másVer menos

A Quiet, Powerful Novel That Will Stay With Me Long After 2026 EndsI read more than 200 books a year across multiple genres, but if I’m being honest, I usually read for escape. Give me romance, fantasy, suspense, or military heroes charging into danger, and I’m happy. So when I picked up The Correspondent by Virginia Evans for a reading challenge, I did so with a fair amount of reluctance and a lingering memory of my seventh-grade English teacher insisting I read “something with more substance” than my beloved romance novels.What I did not expect was a book that would quietly dismantle me emotionally.The Correspondent is not a “just one more chapter” type of novel. In fact, I started and stopped several times while reading because this is a book that demands reflection. Through a series of letters spanning years, Evans slowly reveals the life, regrets, relationships, wisdom, and heartbreak of Sybil Van Antwerp, one of the most authentic and emotionally complex characters I have encountered in years.There is a passage very early in the novel where Sybil describes her evolving vision loss. She writes about life suddenly feeling as though “the movie went black,” and later describes looking at flowers she no longer recognizes. It is only a few lines long, but I had to stop reading after page nine because I realized I was crying without even noticing it.That moment forced me to think about a dear friend living with progressive vision loss. We had laughed together over the years about white canes, assistive devices, and even her oversized seeing-eye dog. Yet never once had I truly asked her what it felt like emotionally as her world slowly dimmed. After reading this book, I finally did. That conversation became one of the most meaningful we have ever shared.That is the power of this novel.Another reviewer wrote that she did not simply read The Correspondent—she lived it. I completely understand what she meant. Sybil’s letters feel intensely personal and real. Each piece of correspondence reveals another layer of her life while also forcing the reader to reflect on their own relationships, memories, and missed opportunities for connection.The novel also left me mourning all the letters, photographs, and cards I have thrown away over the years. Evans beautifully illustrates how correspondence preserves not only memories, but entire lives.Virginia Evans deserves every accolade this novel receives. Her storytelling is intimate, thoughtful, and deeply human. I can easily see why so many book clubs have selected this novel because the discussion topics are endless: aging, memory, grief, relationships, authenticity, regret, forgiveness, and the extraordinary power of words.Of the 93 books I have read so far this year, The Correspondent is the one I believe I will still remember long after 2026 ends.

Not Much Happens
I am not the biggest fan of epistolary novels. They never seem to have enough "meat" on them to deliver a full novel experience. While the writing was lovely, I felt the book meandered. There was no defining moment, but snapshots of dozens of different relationships. Which brings me to two problems with the structure of the book. First, there had to have been at least 50 different characters that Sybil (the main character) was writing to or referencing, and I had to access an online guide to the characters to follow the letters, expecially at the beginning. Secondly, I found myself having to page forward with the letters to Sybil to figure out who the letter was from.That said, it is a worthwhile book, especially if you want something that's not too demanding. There is a tragedy and grief (won't give it away) that defines her life in many ways, although due to the letter format, this happens 40 or 50 years in the past, so we only see a shadow of the original grief. There is some humor in the sense that Sybil writes personal letters to various authors about their books. It made her seem something of harpy (Karen in today's terms), but in the book, at least, some of the authors, including Joan Didion seemed to enjoy the correspondence, so what do I know.Spoiler Alert: Speaking of Joan Didion...Joan commiserates with Sybil because they suffered through the death of child, and Sybil accepts this even though later in the book, it is revealed that Sybil was culpable for her child's accidental death through negligence.Ver másVer menos

Letters, secrets, lies and uncomfortable truths. But humour and fun too.
A superb book with many a hidden punch. The epistolary style is little used, and this is such a good example of how well it can be employed to tell secrets and truths and look deeply into lives. Each person who writes a letter has an individual voice, the protagonist almost demanding that they be someone who replies and reveals. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and I am delighted it has won a prize.Ver másVer menos

Make sure you’re not too tired
I wasn’t quite sure if this book would be my cup of tea, but I gave it a try anyway! You need to have good memory to follow the letters, but it doesn’t hurt to go back every now and then to check details in previous letters. It is quite fun to do so if you’re not falling asleep. Other than that, this book caught my attention in a unique way.Ver másVer menos

全編が手紙である．主人公のSybilはアナポリス郊外に一人で暮らす70代半ばの女性．かつては法律家として名を馳せたが，現在は引退して周囲の人々に手紙を書くのが日課である．離れて暮らす二人の子供，弟，親友，かつての同僚，隣人たちとの間の往復書簡が並ぶ．一部は電子メールである．幼くして事故死した子供や離婚した夫への想い，子供たちとのぎくしゃくした関係，健康問題，養子として育った自らの出自など，さまざな局面が語られてゆく．登場人物はかなり多いが，手紙の相手がどういう関係なのか，文中に登場する人物がいったい誰なのか，その場では説明されないので初めは内容から推測してゆくしかないが，次第に明らかになってゆく．手紙なのでそれぞれは短く読みやすい．それらが互いに絡み合いながら展開し，淡々と進みながらもそれぞれの問題が解決にむけて次第に盛り上がり，最後には長年抱え込んでいた秘密も明らかとなり，ちょっと哀しい，しかし見事な終章を迎える．人生の様々な問題を巡って，読者なりに考えさせられる要素がちりばめられており，非常に味わい深い作品である．実在の人物の往復書簡集というものはあるが，このような形式の創作小説は恐らく初めてで新鮮であった．今年読んだ小説の中では筆頭に挙げられる佳作である．本作は著者の処女作のようであるが，次作以降に期待するところ大である．Ver másVer menos

Wow!
This book was such a great read! Sad and funny and deep and shallow...a fantastic adventure in the life of the main character. A journey I wished didn't end, and I ws very sad when it did.
