TotK: a must have for your library.

Tears of the Kingdom for the Switch is an absolute blast, taking everything I loved about Breath of the Wild and cranking it up with wild new ideas. It’s not perfect, but man, it’s close—Hyrule feels like a giant playground where I’m constantly surprised by what I can do. The story kicks off with Link and Zelda poking around under Hyrule Castle, which goes about as well as you’d expect—cue a world-shaking event called the Upheaval. The plot dives into some cool lore about the Zonai, an ancient civilization, and brings back a certain big bad in a way that gave me chills. The creators can pretty much add whatever they want to the story at this point because timelines in the Zelda universe really don't matter. It’s more emotional than Breath of the Wild, though the story’s told through scattered memories, which can feel a bit like piecing together a puzzle with missing bits. The real star here is the gameplay. The new abilities—Fuse, Ultrahand, Ascend, and Recall—are total game-changers. Fuse lets you slap together crazy weapons, like sticking a rock on a stick for a makeshift hammer. Ultrahand is like playing with digital Legos—you can build rafts, catapults, or even a janky flying machine that might catch fire if you’re not careful (yep, learned that the hard way). Ascend lets you zip through ceilings to reach high places, and Recall rewinds objects’ motion, which saved my butt more than once. These mechanics make every problem a chance to get creative, and I spent hours just messing around with them.Hyrule itself is massive, with floating sky islands and a creepy underground called the Depths that’s like a whole other world. The map reuses a lot from Breath of the Wild, which was a tad disappointing at first, but new caves, wells, and revamped areas kept things fresh. The temples are a big improvement over the last game’s Divine Beasts, with fun puzzles and bosses, though I missed the deeper story of old-school Zelda dungeons.There’s so much to do—side quests, collectibles, and those sneaky Korok seeds—that I lost track of time exploring. The world feels alive, with weather messing up your plans (rain-soaked cliffs are the worst) and NPCs who actually remember Link’s a hero. My main gripes? The Switch can chug in busy areas, with frame rates dipping noticeably, and Ultrahand’s controls can be a pain when you’re trying to glue a wheel to a cart just right. Clocking in at 80-100 hours for the main story, or way more if you’re a completionist like me, Tears of the Kingdom is a beast of a game. It can be a grind to get all 1000 Korok seeds, but it's worth it! It's a great way to discover Hyrule. It’s not the total revolution Breath of the Wild was, and if you didn’t love that game, this might not win you over. But for me, it’s a ridiculous amount of fun—a Zelda adventure that lets you break the rules and make your own. If you’ve got a Switch, you need this in your life.
