A Completely Different, Yet Very Great Sequel
I am rating Breaking Matthew five stars because it deserves it, and was a solid 5-star story. However, it feels unfair after rating the first book in the series, Healing Ruby, five stars as well. If Breaking Matthew is a five-star book, then Healing Ruby is a 10-star.This book, although well-written, interesting, and fun, just couldn't really compare to its predecessor. I'd say it was more typical Christian romantic suspense, a genre I am very familiar with. I love the courtroom scenes, personally, and I really enjoyed having Matthew's perspective. I identify with Matthew more than I do Ruby, so hearing his perspective and passion and humanness was refreshing and fun.It was good to see Ruby be humbled, matured, and tempered down yet keep her godly faith and integrity. I really appreciated her growth in this book and thought it was a good sequel in terms of character growth and story continuation.The culmination of two characters' romance was anticlimactic though, which was disappointing. We had been 100% in the girl's POV in the first novel, listening to her heartache and angst, so to miss her reactions, thoughts, relief, and joy in response to her first confession of love and first kiss was disappointing and left me with more of a numb effect than anything.The plot completely surprised me and did not go as planned one bit, and there was a nice twist.It was definitely a page turner, like a reverse To Kill a Mockinbird, and kept me up to 4 AM! Although it was much more of an easy read than the first book, Healing Ruby, which left me emotionally raw, moved, and touched in ways that the sequel simply did not.Ver másVer menos
