Life saver

Amazing system that has drastically improved our quality of life!

****Update: my daughter was diagnosed with dysphagia via a swallow study at six months old. And oral motor weakness. She survived on the speciality feeding system will she was diagnosed and we started thickening. We don't need them anymore and she's getting stronger. But I'll always be grateful for this system and how accessible it is, my daughter was able to eat and gain back the weight that she lost. Without it we could have been staring at a feeding tube.This system has helped us so much! So my sweet 12 week old baby essentially has the sucking power of a preemie baby, despite being full-term with no anatomical or developmental issues. Our pediatrician and feeding specialist don't have an answer as to why. But she began to really struggle at the bottle, she would constantly loose suction, take in air and reflux, choke, take 45+ minutes to eat, become exhausted, and not get in enough calories in a day. Then she wouldn't sleep well, and we were all miserable. A higher flow nipple overwhelmed her and caused more choking and aspiration. She had a tongue and lip tie released, but she continued to get worse.A blessed mom in an infant reflux support group pointed me to this system and it has changed our lives! My girl took 4 Oz in 20 minutes with just two small little burps, no clicking, no reflux, no crying, it was a miracle! My baby girl has increased her calorie intake, is sleeping better, and her reflux is practically gone. Our feeding specialist was thoroughly impressed with the system, and took it down to use with other patients. It's wonderful since it's still a regular bottle nipple, so she can still practice cupping with her tongue, but get the food she needs without so much work and suffering. It's an amazing tool that hopefully we won't need forever, but I was in tears during that first feeding. I was spending all day feeding her, and now we have time to go on walks, go visit family, and we can have our life back! I'm so grateful that this set is so available and affordable. It has greatly improved the quality of both of our lives, and provided me more time to play and bond with my darling baby. Thank you Dr. Browns!Ver más

Specialty feeding bottle

My son was diagnosed with cleft lip and palate at second trimester screening. Boy, was I surprised or shocked. I was originally planning to breastfeed my baby so I went through several layers of emotional and mental stages. And I finally gathered myself and researched what my options were. On websites, Medela specialty feeding bottle looked the most preferred or popular among cleft babies. Also they were the most expensive bottles so I thought they should work for my baby. Fortunately, my baby arrived here little earlier and I haven't had time to actually purchase them. What a beautiful baby!! The problem was he did not want to eat. The speech pathologist brought Pigeon bottle so we tried it. First two days, he was sleeping all day long taking formula only 2ml here and 3 ml there. We also tried Medela bottle but it wasn't much different. Doctors and nurses took him to nicu because his blood glucose levels was barely normal. Few days after many trials and error, also putting feeding tube through his nose and little hope, disappointment and tears, we tried Dr. Brown bottle. It was working for my son!! He started taking 20ml, 30ml and even 40ml. We came home from nicu when he was 3 weeks old. Now he is 2month old and is one little hungry baby who wants to constantly eat. I love Dr. Brown bottle. Having cleft lip and palate and having a tongue-tie, it was really hard for my son to eat. However, I am not saying Dr. Brown bottle is the best. My point is that every baby is different and there will be one bottle that fits with your baby. I wanted to share my story with other moms and dads who have baby with feeding difficulty. Use these for soft cleft palate and exclusively pumping

If your son or daughter has a cleft soft palate, like my daughter does, you’re going to want to figure out which of the three types of bottles that your child will take food from, Dr. Browns Specialty feeding system being one of them, since breastfeeding is usually not possible in this circumstance. We use Dr. Browns only. When feeding a baby with a cleft, hold them more upright (their back at a 45-90 degree angle). My daughter was pretty gurgley while being fed until we figured out we were having her leaned back too much.My daughter cannot create the negative seal required in order to suck liquid, so the beauty of the specialty system is that the one-way flow valve keeps the milk in the nipple portion and the baby can use a munching motion in order to get the milk out. It just needs prepped upfront to put a little milk in the nipple (squeeze the nipple, blocking the hole and flip upside down).I go through a ton of bottles a day between her eating and exclusively pumping. The bottles aren’t particularly easy to clean, especially since each one is 6 pieces each, and I eventually gave up on hand washing them and put them in the dishwasher overnight. They’ve handled that for the past three months with no problems. However, because I’m using breastmilk, a residue builds up on them, so at least once a week, I soak them in the sink with a vinegar-water mix and use a water bottle cleaner to scrub them out.These come with size one and two nipples. I continued to have issues feeding my daughter as it seemed she got winded and tired from eating, and took a long time trying to eat. Dr. Brown’s sells higher flow nipples. If your child has a cleft, don’t be afraid to move up nipple sizes if you’re experiencing similar issues to what I described. By 2.5 months in, she was on the level 4 nipple which is supposed to be for 9+ months. It takes a couple days to adjust to the higher flow, but it made a world of difference.I bought two of the normal bottle sets and two of the specialty bottle sets. I also bought two sets (12 ea) of the nipples each time I went up a flow or else I would have gone crazy just trying to wash bottles constantly. Especially if you’ve decided to commit to exclusively pumping, as I have, and using these bottles, I encourage you to stock up.For pumping I got a converter for my Spectra flanges (side note, pumping shouldn’t hurt. It took me 5 flange sizes before I found the right one that didn’t pinch) so that I could pump directly into the Dr. Brown’s bottles. I use Papablic Leak-Proof Pump bottle adapter, for Spectra S1 S2 Pump flanges to use with Medela Baby Bottles, 4 pack ($10.95 when I purchased it on Amazon).Also, a hand free pumping bra is a must. If you’re exclusively pumping, I suggest you buy two so that when one is in the wash you still have one to use. I use Simple Wishes Signature Hands Free Pumping Bra, Patented, XS-Large ($34.99 when I purchased it on Amazon).I wish they sold the one way flow valves separately.I know it was a lot of information, but if you’re in a similar circumstance to what I found myself in, I hope it’s helpful.

Excellently reviewed for children with clefts

I am excited to try these out with my son, who will be born with a unilateral left cleft lip and palate. I was recommended these, by a large Facebook group, and am hopeful that these will be the only bottles I will need. These came in on time, are very high quality and have excellent details of how to use, clean and store them. The instructions also come in many languages, in case that is a concern of yours. These are reasonably priced, aesthetically pleasing and come with small brushes to clean all the parts. I can only imagine I’ll be pleased to use these, but I will update my review when my son arrives.Ver más
