  LIFE CHANGING!!!! PLS READ

  I have a 40 lb extremely reactive bernedoodle. He is so bad on the leash after 4 years of trying to train him, shock collars, prong collars, you name it. NOTHING worked!!!! He was pulling, he was going psycho when he saw other dogs, he was randomly yanking the leash and injured my older dad’s shoulder. I barely walked him anymore, I onlyever took him out to do his business and rushed him back inside when he was done so he didn’t have a chance to go crazy.When I tell you this leash was a desperate last attempt to get him to behave, I had zero hopes. I was scared he was going to do his usual yanking on the leash and injure his neck.Day 1 he hated it, thrashed around, I took him for a short walk around my building and I was trying to be patient with him when he would try to use his paws to push it off his nose.Day 2 he was getting used to it, still trying to paw it off a little but substantially less.Yesterday was Day 3 and people. I have a new and changed dog. I took him for an hour walk yesterday and he didn’t pull me once, he didn’t try to pull the headcollar off at all, he saw other dogs and whined a little but then snapped back out of it instead of going wild. He was an angel. It was the best behaved he has ever been. I had to double take to make sure it was the same dog. I will be using this for good in the foreseeable future, I will be recommending to everyone who has a reactive and pulling dog like mine.It’s a win win! More walks for him, less frustration and injuries for me!(Also for anyone wondering, they can still eat, drink, pant, breathe, bark, and do everything else just fine)My 40 lb bernedoodle fit well in a size medium, it was true to size.   I'd like to think that my dogs are fairly well-trained (wouldn't most people?) and that they listen to me when I give them commands or ask them to stop doing something. For the most part, they behave just as I'd expect for 3.5 and 1 year old German Shepherds. They are high-energy, happy, healthy animals who love other people and dogs alike. Unfortunately, I had to resort to these leaders because my dogs' excitement very nearly resulted in a broken wrist for me.I decided to take them to the park in our apartment complex one afternoon; there's usually no one there so pulling on the leash isn't really a problem. This particular day, however, there was a pit bull out in the park, sitting next to the fence. There was no owner in sight and the dog had no collar, so I assume that he'd wandered into the complex on his own. When my girls saw him, their hackles rose immediately and they started pulling so hard on their leashes that I couldn't stand my ground. They dragged me to the fence where they proceeded to snap at the dog through the fence, where the other dog was already snapping at them. I couldn't get a good enough grip on either of the leashes to pull my dogs away; all I could do was stand there hoping that the other dog wouldn't realize that the gate (approximately 20 feet away) was open. I was finally able to pull Seven, the smallest, away from the fence, but then she went around behind me while Riddley crossed in front, effectively swapping places with each other and wrapping me in the leashes in the process. All it took after that was a hard tug and I was falling toward the ground, reaching out to catch myself with my right hand. I hit the ground hard, listening to my wrist crackle under the impact of my weight against the ground. In all of the ruckus, however, I never let go of their leashes.I knew something had to give here. I wasn't concerned with their indoor behavior (as I said before, they're both very well-behaved and the incident with the pit bull was highly unusual) but I was almost afraid to take them out for walks anymore. My fiance and I discussed multiple possibilities, most of which we weren't very enthusiastic about. Choke collars make the dogs look mean and shock collars are inhumane - my sister used one on her Great Dane and now he doesn't trust anyone but my mom. Eventually, one of the GSD instagrammers that we follow posted a photo of her dog in a gentle leader and we began researching it. We decided that it was a much safer method for walk training and pulling prevention, and the colors it came in didn't look menacing or muzzle-like, so we ordered two for our dogs in colors to match their collars so that we could tell them apart.Sizing the leaders was surprisingly easy. Once we had the leaders on the dogs, we let them wear them for a few minutes every hour or so to get used to the sensation. We also put them on before meal time and took them off afterwards so that the girls would associate the leaders with good things rather than think of them as a punishment. We didn't try walking with them until the next day. With these leaders on, my dogs are completely different dogs. They walk next to me, they never try to pull and after the first few walks, they never paw at the leaders or try to get them off. We've encountered barking dogs on our walks and although Seven still gets excited and tries to get to the dog, her behavior is quickly corrected and she goes on her way without so much as a growl. I was floored by the difference made in their behavior just by switching from a neck collar to a head collar. My initial concern was that Seven would try to pull and injure her neck (she's a recently adopted shelter dog, and we're still working with her on her authority issues). With the leader, however, she doesn't pull and there's no risk of injury. Both dogs can still do all of the normal dog things they usually do without the leader (eat, drink, play, chew, bark, breathe, etc.) and now, a few weeks after introducing the head collars, they don't even notice the sensation on their noses. I noticed that a few reviewers said that their head collars broke and their dog was able to run away. Because of those reviews, we thoroughly tested both leaders (pulling, yanking, tugging, etc.) before putting them on the girls. I assume the leaders that broke were part of a bad batch or some sort of fluke because we saw no breaking or fraying whatsoever.All in all, we think these are a fantastic investment and we're so glad to have them. Walks that used to take two fully engaged arms and resulted in soreness and nearly broken bones are now possible with a single hand and a loose grip. I am thrilled with this purchase and now recommend this product to everyone who struggles with walking their dogs.Photos attached: Riddley in blue and Seven in Red

  55+ years w/ 2-3 dogs at a time in our lives and this is indeed the best no-pull ever!

  My wife and I have had many dogs in our lives over the last 55+ years. Typically there is always 2 or 3 dogs in our happy pack!We have a box full of every lead, collar and full harness design you can imagine.We've tried them all. Some do help, but, do not fully allow complete control of your dog's pulling, lunging, chasing, and desire to pull you along wherever they go.We've tried prongs as well. Nope, no go.The PetSafe Gentle Leader/Headcollar is indeed the very best design we've ever used, ...period.It's design, unlike any other, defeats the ability of a dog to pull with its body and/or neck using most of its major body strength.With this PetSafe design, All of its efforts and pull can only be done using its muzzle where there is very little leverage nor strength to pull hard with only it's muzzle and not the rest of its body. ..and the harder it pulls, the more your dog's head is pulled the opposite direction of where it intended to go!This headcollar is a marvel since it's only made of a few narrow pieces of nylon, but, it works perfectly based on the principles of using the dogs pulling force again it at the muzzle position!The added benefit is this Headcollar is on and off in seconds. A far cry from the no tug harnesses we used to use.Lastly, we had an issue where a dog got loose, ran over towards my dog and he reacted intensely, trying to pull away from me quite hard while facing me, but, this lightweight Headcollar held up just fine and the metal buckle to adjust the sizing for the strap that goes around the muzzle held sizing position without any slippage at all.We got our first one for a Golden Retriever puppy here and it worked so well, we ordered a larger size for our adopted 4 year old mix (who thought he was in charge for all daily walks) and this design has completely solved all issues for control of our dogs while walking.In the two weeks both have been using it, as soon as it goes on, they "know" that "resistance is futile"!If you are at wits end for something, (anything!) to get back 100% control of your dog when walking, this IS the Headcollar to buy.We plan to donate a box full of now un-used harnesses and collars that while still having plenty of life left in them, (but) none of them will ever compare to what this PetSafe Headcollar can do.5 stars all around. Give this one a try. You'll be glad you did!

  What you need to know (read the bottom to skip the story)

  I have a border collie mix, and she wasn't too bad at pulling however she always got overexcited whenever she saw a person/bird/squirrel or another living thing and this would cause her to pull. I tried a lot of methods to prevent this, from treats to shock collars (which not only didn't work I felt so bad and guilty for using one in the first place) I even tried harnesses with the front loop to prevent pulling. It didn't work, she kept pulling or lunging spontaneously at something, it not only made people fear her (and she is a very friendly dog) but the strength of her lunges was really taking a toll on my shoulder, and my hand.After being hesitant I finally decided to get this head harness, I was hesitant to buy it at first because I thought it would be cruel and painful to my dog, but I needed something stern and something stubborn like me.Now onto getting the product, it came with everything advertised. You don't really need to watch the CD as most of the information is on the paper pamphlet it provides you, which comes with images. I put it on my dog no problem took it off put it on rewarded her for keeping it on her without her trying to scratch or pull it off. Now this was fine however when we began to walk she HATED this being on her face, I tried to walk inside my home first before I moved out into the outside world where there would be a lot of distractions, and living in NYC there is a lot of those. I tried regular dog treats however I needed something she desired more, something to take her mind off of the strap on her face. This is were cold cuts ham came in, I let the leash drag so she can get use to that weight and walked back and forth my home every time she went down I quickly whipped out the ham to distract her and it worked. I did this a couple of times sometimes I would have to unhook her claws from getting stuck in the strap but needless to say the ham did a pretty good job.Now going outside for the first time, she was stupidly calm, not gunna say I was dumbstruck but honestly I was pretty dumbstruck. I felt like one of those people in the infomercials with where you go from and over excited dog to a very calm and behaved one in five minutes (except it took me about an hour and a half to get her use to it) the pressure from the head harness seemed to do the trick, every time she would go just a little too far walking not pulling the head harness would very slightly tug and she would quickly get back a little. Within one day she was respecting the leash boundaries. Every once in a while within the two days she would try and fight it and I would whip out the ham just give her a very small piece and she would be back to forgetting all about it.Now there is a problem with this, the material I can't say for sure how long it would last but I would update if it ends up breaking. There is also an issue with the padding, there is very little padding on the underside of the strap that goes onto the dogs muzzle, so even if a dog does pull harshly with the head harness on, it is going to give sort of an Indian burn on their muzzle. I found out the hard way when one of my neighbors dog got loose, and they made no effort to go grab it as it came after my dog and go underneath her biting her. Now my dog does not tolerate another dog biting her and will attack, as I was trying to get the smaller dog out from underneath her, my left hand which held the leash had a firm grip so her head couldn't, get down and bit my hand or the smaller dog. Grabbing the smaller dog I made sure to separate it even though my dog still wanted revenge on the little sh**t. After the incident however, when I took off the head harness it rubbed off a small bit of her fur creating this very narrow line, though my dog didn't seem to be in any pain and other then that she was fine it still bother me.SO BOTTOM LINE:Yes, it will HELP PREVENT your dog from pulling, the material is not the best of the best but it seemed pretty good, maybe it would last a couple months maybe not, I will have to continue using it to see. Make sure your dog is okay with the head harness instead of just putting it on and going out with it, because if they are trying to pull it off their face, they can cause serious injury to their eyes or cut their muzzle up and get highly frustrated, and most likely create a bad experience in which they will refuse to put it on. Dogs who continue to pull very aggressively with this on, beware, because it will grind into their muzzle and continue use it could cause a gash in their muzzle from the strap, it does not have much to any cushion on the strap that goes onto the muzzle, so it would probably feel like an Indian burn on your arm but onto the dogs face. Other then that dogs who don't have that much problem with the head harness or got use to it being on their face, this will help them to respect the leash boundaries (which just means the length of the leash you have given them for walking), it is also quite a pain for them (or at least my dog) to try and get it off their face with one or two of their paws.

  The best

  I purchased my dog's Gentle Leader when he was about a year old. He's a big boisterous Lab, and I'd been unsuccessful at curbing his enthusiasm on walks, although not for a lack of trying every technique I could think of, short of a choke chain. I have the best of intentions, but I'm apparently not trainer enough for this dog. The first walk with the GL was like a whole different experience, and made our walks far more enjoyable.I knew he didn't really like having it on his face, and so eventually tried a front clip harness on the advice of an all-positive trainer, which he seemed to greatly prefer, and it worked pretty well in general, although he found out in short order that he was more than strong enough to drag me over to visit passing neighbors and lunge at ever dog or cat he came across. Sadly he had an experience at doggie day care that transformed him from a very friendly, well socialized dog to a dog that can't be trusted to play nice with unfamiliar dogs, or meet them politely on leash, so I have to be very careful not to allow too much close contact. The front-clip halter made the problem worse...he seemed to feel so free when wearing it that his reactions on leash to other dogs just got worse and worse, despite my efforts at distraction, treats for looking away, etc. Plus, I cannot really control him physically with that.So I finally decided to go back to the GL to see if it helped at all. It did, immediately. He is now able to remain calm, even when he sees the dog he hates most, which used to send him into an absolute rage. With GL on, the biggest reaction when we pass that dog is just pricked up ears, a brief look, then moving on...no pulling, growling, no hair up, nothing. I've noticed that his lack of reaction creates a much better response from the other dog as well. I don't doubt that my much higher confidence levels using the GL are part of the magic. I would get very anxious near other dogs when he was in the harness, knowing how reactive he would be. At least with the GL, I know I can physically handle him if he does get agitated, and am therefore able to remain calm, and it makes all the difference in my own demeanor. Whatever the reason, I'm going to stick with GL from now on. I know it has to be better for him both physically and psychologically, not getting all worked up just by seeing other dogs coming in our direction. I think I'll get a black one, though (mine is bright red) so it will be less noticable on his black fur.The GL is also the only thing I know of that will allow me to keep this 4 y/o puppy from jumping on people when he meets them. He's fine with people who know how to behave with large rambunctious dogs, but others tend to get him all worked up (he LOVES all people). When someone wants to interact with him, I just step on his leash so he can move around without tension, but can't launch himself off the ground for that surprise kiss/head bump that he's so good at. After just a few seconds, he calms right down and gets lots of affection, which is his drug of choice.Bottom line: Even though my dog would probably prefer to wear something else for walking, I think he is actually happier due to the effects of the GL. He gets longer walks, far fewer emotional highs and lows, and is allowed to interact with many more people. I can take him almost anywhere with me while wearing GL without worrying that he'll behave badly, so it really makes his world much larger than it would otherwise be.Many thanks to Premier for creating this collar.ETA: If you purchase and use this collar, please remember to let your dog sniff and pee and explore here and there on your walks while you maintain slack in the leash. It's great to have him heel so nicely, but remember he's a dog and he needs to enjoy the walk too. It's probably the most interesting part of his day :)

  The Leader can be Very Effective just not for us

  I am training my 8 month old sheltie and I thought the leader might help her walk better on leash. So far it hasn’t!The leader fit well for a 25 lb dog and is good quality. Unfortunately she is still a bit wired and isn’t what I would consider calm.
