Compelling and Unique Fantasy World for Young Adults
Aurora is a graphic novel version of the author's original webcomic of the same name. The print volume contains all the pages that were visible online, as well as additions like author's notes and in-story content like one of the character's journals. Its author, Red, is best known for her youtube channel Overly Sarcastic Productions, where for more than a decade she has been making animated video essays that analyze the tropes and themes of fiction and mythology. She's clearly turned this expertise in building fictional worlds to building her own.Aurora is a fantasy story set on an alien world where the unique magic system seems to be baked into the setting and the characters on an almost scientific level, and are key to how each of the main characters interact with the magical world around them. One studies magic like a scientist, one uses magic on instinct, one can't use magic at all, and one is a unique existence that has a perspective all his own, a demigod who in many ways doesn't belong to the same system as the others. Together, they search for a way to reach the core of their world, to stop a strange villainous magician who's been kidnapping gods.It has strong characters, a compelling world, a unique internal mythology, colorful and charming manga-inspired art, all coming together into a great adventure story for young adult fans of fantasy.
