Very well designed, but . . .
I’m amazed at how cleverly designed this coffee maker is, and how beautifully it is presented. It comes packaged in a box, inside a sleeve, inside an outer box, and immediately looks like a nice gift. Inside all the packaging are a card with the coffee maker’s individual serial number and a QR code to scan AND a website to use to register your product. It also includes a rugged drawstring bag in which to store and easily transport your coffee maker, and a decal for the side of the coffee maker if you really want to spiff it up. Everything needed tucks neatly inside the coffee maker, including a really clever detachable spoon. You use it assembled to measure your coffee, and disassembled to stir the coffee. When I held the spoon up to my usual coffee scoop, it appeared that my regular coffee scoop held about 1/3 more coffee per scoop than the detachable spoon. The instructions (in 14 different languages) are extremely clear and easy to follow. The coffee maker works smoothly, and the drinking cup even has a somewhat heatproof heavy rubber band around it to grip. The coffee ground area is easy to access for cleaning.The reasons why I only gave this product 4 stars instead of 5 are:1 - In my daily life I see limited use for it. It requires that you boil water in a separate device to add to the coffee maker. So I would just use my electric coffee maker.2 - If you REALLY enlarge my picture of the brewing coffee you may be able to see the 4oz. and 8oz. markings on the side of the cup. I couldn’t see them while I was pouring in the boiling water.3 - The instructions say to set it on a flat surface and press straight down to filter the coffee. I can see taking this coffee maker on a camping trip, but if you’re out in the wilds I think it would be harder to find a truly flat surface to use for this step in the process.4 - I didn’t measure it out, but it appeared to me that the fully prepared quantity of coffee made was only about 6 oz. I added my normal amounts of half and half and sugar to taste to the brewed coffee and found it to taste extremely concentrated. You REALLY get the French press taste.5 - The directions say to rinse the filter mesh and lid under running water to clean. If this were taken camping, I’m not sure about the availability of running water for cleaning.I think that the price is reasonable for such a cleverly designed product, IF you are someone who really values a jolt of strong coffee out in the wilds. If you’re an average “I need my coffee to get started in the morning” person, then I think this product is probably more effort than you might wish.Ver másVer menos

Compact, easy cleaning travel press makes a great 8 oz cup of coffee
This is a fabulously easy to use portable French press and drinking cop in one. It consists of the press cylinder and filter, 2 lids, drinking cup, coffee scoop that converts to coffee stirrer, brush, comprehensive multilingual instruction booklet, registration card, a promo sticker, and a soft drawstring carry bag for the compactly and securely nested parts.I am pleased to report there was zero plastic odor on the unboxing, and added no strange flavors in the coffee. (I gave it a good rinse before using, of course.)There is enough space in the cup/cylinder assembly and bag to hold a zip bag of ground coffee, plus sweetener and creamer packets.I already travel with a collapsible silicone electric kettle because I don’t always trust the cleanliness of hotel room coffee makers, and I suspect I’m not alone since they are becoming rare. But I still need that first cup of coffee before I get dressed. This is going to be a great addition to my travel bag.It makes a really good cup of coffee! I only see 2 small flaws. And they aren’t really flaws, just preferences:1.) This brews a maximum of 8 oz. (The cup will hold 8 oz black coffee with ample space for creamers/syrups or even ice.). But I’m a minimum 12 oz “cup” person.2.) The instructions say to use 3 scoops of coffee and steep for one minute. That works, but at least with my preferred coffee, it’s excessive. I’d cut back if I was just drinking 8 oz and maybe increase the steeping time. On the other hand, I was able to brew 2 cups off the same grounds. I recommend you experiment to fine tune to your taste.If I were an 8 oz coffee person, I would probably use this as my daily morning coffee maker. I would have loved to take this to my office when I was at a prior job that provided a free water cooler with a hot valve, and stale over priced coffee.Speaking of cups, the drinking cup doesn’t have a handle but I found it fits perfectly into a soft handled neoprene pint mason jar sleeve I already had. I think a can coozie would work too if you need a handle or squishy grip.If you have an upper limb injury or disability, be aware that starting the press requires strong downward pressure. I believe it is air resistance in the chamber. You may want to use both hands or rest your chin on your hand to get it moving. Once you get past the initial resistance, it is very easy.The used grounds compress like an espresso puck and will come out very easily to anyone who is familiar with a knock box. I really didn’t need the brush to clean the last stray grounds off the filter. I just held it under running water. I have used multiple reusable press and pour-over filters, and this was the easiest cleaning yet.

Good coffee and easy to use
I am a long time Aeropress user and have made hundreds of cups using it, so I was excited to try a new novel method to the single serving brewing approach. My first impression of the machine was very good. The pieces and parts, though almost entirely made of plastic (just like my Aeropress) are premium feeling and made from good material. I disassembled my brewer before using it to clean it and get a feel for how it works and it is pretty neat. Unlike the Aeropress in which the plunger goes into the sleeve, on the wacaco, the filter is also the plunger and moves up into the sleeve. This accomplishes basically the same thing, compressing the air void above the coffee, and forcing the liquid through the filter and into the cup, but it is definitely and different way to think about the problem. I was surprised that this cam with a reusable metal filter considering the price point of the brewer (~ $30), since that is typically an item you pay extra for with other brewing systems.As far as the coffee goes, it makes a really good cup and the process is very easy to to follow once you understand it. I've made cups with pre-ground store bought coffee and with home roasted, home ground beans, and the brewer made good coffee with both. I will say, I need to dial in the grind size a bit, but it was a decent cup of still. The cup it produced was similar to my Aeropress, though you are limited in size a bit due to the size of the cup that comes with it. If you are willing to make a strong brew in the provided cup and transfer to another mug to top off with hot water, you could make larger portions. You'd just have to alter the recipe to increase the strength and dilute a bit.In all, this makes a great cup, and would be great for travel. For example this will make a far superior cup of coffee as compared to the coffee they typically provide you in a hotel. At $30, this is also a pretty inexpensive entry into single serving coffee brewers and easy to use. I highly recommend if you are looking to get this for travel or even home use to introduce single serving brewers and learning more about coffee.Ver másVer menos

Impressive brewer
I'm very impressed with this coffee brewer. I primarily drink espresso and prefer syrupy chocolatey beans like Sumatra and Guatemalan beans. I've found that these don't taste as good in the French press as fruitier beans which don't taste good as espresso. I like strong coffee and do not at all mind the "grit" and grounds in the bottom of a cup from the French press. This brewer seems to just be a French press at first but it is not. The screen is much much finer. No grounds get through it and into the cup. At the bottom of the cup may be a small suspended swirl but no grit or grounds. I believe with the smaller screen and quicker recommended extraction time (1 minute vs 4 in the French press) you're meant to grind finer than with the French press. Due to the lessened extraction time, I've found darker roasts to taste better in this than a typical French press. Another thing that I like about this brewer is that while pressing, no liquid gets past the multiple seals so there are no drips or mess. The bean puck at the end of the press is almost completely bone dry and no coffee is wasted unlike a French press which leaves a wet slurry behind. Lastly, cleanup is much easier. No grounds stuck all the way around the spring/screen assembly of a French press to mess with. Everything rinses away pretty easily. As far as any negatives, the brewer and cup are plastic. Hopefully it's a good plastic for high temp liquids. The brewer has lines to measure ounces but there is no line for 0 and therefore it's completely useless as the starting point can have the cup pushed in different amounts. So I have to use a scale for measurement or heat the water in a measuring cup. I definitely recommend this brewer and I'm eager to mess with the variables (grind size, water to coffee ratio, extraction time, temperature) to see how well I can get things to brewVer másVer menos

A French press, Immersion brew blend
- I like how everything fits together. The plastic is thick and sturdy, but there’s too many pieces to wash after each use. I’m glad there was extra room for fresh coffee to bloom.- When I followed the instructions: 15g of coffee, 194℉ water, a medium grind, pour in the water, and let it soak for 1 minute, it took about 2 minutes overall to brew. It’s also wonderful that a book was included with the instructions. It’s detailed and grammatically correct, which I appreciate.- The coffee flavor was strong like a French press and had the clean, smooth mouthfeel you typically get from a well-designed immersion fine-filtration brewer. There were no fine coffee particles at the bottom of the cup.- The pressing mechanism works great, and I really like the controlled flow valve. It provides noticeable resistance during pressing and gives me more control over the flow. One improvement would be to print the 4oz and 8oz indicators in white so they’re easier to see while pouring the water in.- If you need a portable coffee maker, I’d recommend it. However, this won’t be my daily driver. It’s just too much work to clean after each use.Ver másVer menos

Compact French Press That’s Great for Travel
I really like how compact and self-contained this French press is. The brewer and cup fit together into one small unit, so it doesn’t take up much space in a bag or even a desk drawer. It’s a convenient option when I want fresh coffee without bringing along a larger coffee maker.The built-in stainless steel filter is a nice feature since there are no paper filters or pods to deal with. The press mechanism is also very simple to use. You just prepare the coffee, add the water, let it steep, and press down on the cup. I found the whole process quick and straightforward, with very little cleanup afterward.The anti-drip design is another nice touch because it keeps the coffee contained while it’s brewing instead of immediately dripping through. The 8-ounce capacity is perfect for a single cup, although it would obviously be too small if you’re trying to make coffee for several people at once.Overall, this is a clever little French press that’s especially well suited for travel, camping, the office, or anywhere space is limited. What a clever travel coffee press!
I've made a couple of cups of coffee with this little French press already, and I can tell it's going to be the perfect travel companion.I travel occasionally for work, and the hotels I stay in do not have French presses, which is what I use daily for my own coffee. I am often frustrated at the low quality of coffee I have to drink while away.This press has a nice bag that it can be stored in, and all of the parts of the press fit neatly together. The measuring/stirring spoon is included, the plunger is simple to use, and the cup is the perfect size. What a clever idea! It cleans up easily. The taste is good, and the brew strength is strong.There is a little booklet that comes with it that shows how it works, and it's super simple!Ver másVer menos

Decent alternative to the Aeropress Go
Very good, especially for the price.It might not be quite as durable as the Aeropress Go, it also has a smaller capacity cup.It does pack down a bit smaller though and the metal filter works very well.If you prioritise size and weight and tend to just make one cup then this is the better option.If you value a heavier weight build and a slightly increased capacity then the Go might be for you.It is a well made and nicely finished product which makes a very nice cup of coffee.Ver másVer menos

Great little affordable brewer
I'm a big fan of Wacaco products so I'm probably a bit biased here. I own most of their brewers and have been exceptionally pleased with all of them. When I saw this, I thought I'd have to try it, and I'm glad I did.The Prestina is a pretty simple piece of kit, not unlike an Aeropress (back to that in a minute). You put the grounds in, stir to make sure they're wet, wait a bit, and then 'press' to push the coffee through a filter. SimpleThe coffee is pretty good. Tastes similar to a French Press (with Hoffman method), but brews much faster - following Wacaco's instructions got me a cup of coffee in < 2 minutes, whereas a French Press can take upwards of 10 minutes. It is metal filtered, which means your personal preference of taste matters (I prefer paper filters). The maximum fill is 240ml which is pretty normal for a brewer, and there's a handy little gauge on the inside of the brew chamber if you don't have a set of scales nearby. In my usage with the sage green colour, the gauge is a bit hard to see, but it seems relatively accurate with my scales reporting ~235.1g of water. The instructions are clear, and as a brewer it is very easy to use, and similarly easy to clean.Which leads me to the elephant in the room that is the Aeropress. This is essentially competing with the Aeropress Go, which is a similarly sized travel brewer with a self-contained cup. Both brew with 240ml of water. It is a very similar brewing method, for a very similar taste if you use a metal filter on your Aeropress. The major difference is that there's a pressure valve on the Prestina, a normal aeropress merely has the filter. The valve is similar in function to the Prismo attachment to an Aeropress, but the Prestina's valve seems to add less resistance than the Prismo. The valve has the advantage that it stops liquid dripping out the bottom before you're ready to press.I've long since given away my Aeropress Go to a friend, so I can't compare directly in person, but by memory (and the spec sheet) the Prestina is smaller and lighter than the Go. It feels a bit cheaper and a bit less sturdy in terms of build, but that is reflected in the price - $44.90AUD for Prestina, $71.90AUD for Aeropress Go at time of writing. I have no concerns about the build quality though, it is absolutely durable, just not as good as the Aeropress.My only real concern with build is that the brewer gets very hot to hold when brewing, as the walls of the chamber aren't thick enough.I am very happy with the cups of coffee I've made with it so far. I'm traveling again soon and will be taking the Prestina as my sole brewer.
