Victorinox Companion Swiss Army Knife

Got the Victorinox Companion Swiss Army knife earlier than I expected and it is great! The knife is a little bigger than I expected but love the larger scissors and the special “box cutter” tool is great! The blade is very sharp, so be careful.

Good balance of tools for EDC

This solved the minor shortcomings I had with the Compact (which is still a very good SAK). Now to be fair, the compact is only a two layer knife and the Companion is a three layer knife. But I think for the slight penalty of the additional layer, you still have an efficiently designed knife that is still small enough to carry easily. The added functionality far outweighs the very minor size difference in this case. In fact, when I compare Companion to my other three layer SAKs, none actually equal it in the functional aspect. Its functions are more in keeping with the four layer SAKs.With respect to the improvements, first, it has a much better (read functional) file. Not only that, but it replaces where the smaller general blade would normally be, which has been an unnecessary blade for me with respect to most of my collection of Swiss Army Knives. The file on the Compact is small and integrated with another tool (the hook) in a way that makes it less useful. The other bonus is the box/utility cutter tool with integrated small flat head. For me, this gets far more use by a long shot than other tools that would normally be there, such as the can opener. I use to carry the SAK Executive for several years (I still have it) which has an orange peeler blade that was functionally one of the best small box cutter around. The box cutter on the Companion is purpose designed and works quite well. This is a great replacement/addition that Victorinox installed and complements the overall tool selection well.I would recommend, especially for fine woodworkers who are accustomed to sharpening chisels and plane irons, to putting the flat of the box cutter tool on a 2000 or so grit stone and then a strop. This should take it from pretty sharp to very sharp and polished and will make it work effortlessly. The built in pen is a bonus. I would, of course add a steel pin into the built receptacle for that, plus get an eyeglass screwdriver for the corkscrew. This configuration will help you address most of the utilitarian situations that one may encounter. If I could only have one SAK, this would be my pick.Ver más

Best SAK for EDC yet… but no pin?

This is in my opinion the best Swiss Army Knife you can own for urban/suburban everyday carry. The new package opener/small flathead/phillips combo tool is perfectly designed for its intended use, and that small flathead really does work on Phillips screws, though not quite as well as a dedicated Phillips driver. I know some people actually use multi tool lobster claw style can openers and will miss it, but in my 45 years of life I have NEVER used one and I love that it was replaced with this much more useful combo tool. The nail file cuts aggressively and will work out any annoying snags or hangnails on the go, and the scissors are Victorinox’s usual outstanding quality. The parcel hook… well, it’s there lol. There are YouTube videos showing various tasks that it can perform, and I honestly couldn’t see myself using it for any of them, but who knows what the future holds. Maybe it’ll save my life one day.It is important to me to have eyeglass screwdrivers for any multi tool I intend to carry, and neither the Companion or any other SAK includes them. Victorinox makes micro bits that can be inserted into the corkscrew and they work great in a pinch, but you can only include one. So the Phillips micro bit rides in the corkscrew and I used a dremel to grind down the fingernail cleaner into a micro flathead. It pained me a bit to ruin that perfect Victorinox fit and finish, but with this mod I now I have two fully functional eyeglass bits on my SAK.There is a tiny bit of blade rub between the nail file and main knife blade. Since Victorinox produces their tools to such exacting specs, it wouldn’t surprise me if most or all Companions have this same issue, but this is a tool that will get used and abused, dropped, scratched, full of dust and lint, etc., so I don’t think it’s anything to worry about. All told, while not perfect, this is the best multi tool for everyday pocket carry I have yet found. I also own the Rocktol Gen-R Lite. With its bigger blade and scissors, coarse/fine file, 1/4 inch bit driver, and double sided flat/phillips micro bit, it arguably features a better tool set. But it is a 4.5oz hunk of metal that I find a bit too heavy and chunky to live in my pocket, and it just doesn’t have the classic, sleek elegance of a Victorinox. The reason I am deleting a full star from my rating is because the Companion features a pinhole at the base of the corkscrew, but they did not include the pin. From online research I know this is by design and not just an oversight on the Companion I received. Really, Victorinox? I have to make a separate purchase, or go to a crafts store, or go rummaging through my mother’s sowing kit, for a pin? You go through the trouble of designing a new multitool, charge $40-50 for it, and can’t include the damn pin? Almost kind of funny if it wasn’t so infuriating, and seems to me like a clear money grab. They probably have literally a million pins sitting at the factory that cost them 5 cents to produce and are waiting to be shipped out separately for 5 bucks. I guess the jokes on me since I still bought the tool. If I can find a good quality stainless one that fits from anywhere other than Victorinox, that is what I’ll do, but they’ve still made me feel kind of foolish.

A great addition to the Victorinox line

This is one of the best everyday knives that Victorinox makes -- it's basically a Climber with plus scales (which includes the pen), substitution of the nail file for the small blade, and substitution of the package opener for the can opener. The substitution of the nail file for the small blade is a really welcome change -- I use a nail file far more than the 2nd blade. And the package opener is far more useful to me than the can opener that it replaces (the package opener works well as a scorer and as a staple remover too). I like having the pen in the scales as well (tip -- if you are using the pen, lift up the package hook on the bottom of the knife, slip the pen into the slot left where the package hook sits, and then bring the package hook down to secure the pen --makes the pen much easier to use). I prefer this knife to the Compact for everyday carry.Ver más

Prima zakmes
