Room 706 by Ellie Levenson is thriller mystery romance? More like suspense fiction.A hotel under siege. A woman trapped in a room with the man she should not be with. A man who is not her husband. But Room 706 is not interested in distractions- it's living in your mind when things get REAL.I picked this up went in with no real expectations and blindly! What I discovered was a hidden gem and more intimate than I anticipated. Driven by quiet suspense and steady paced prose stuck in the main character's spiraling thoughts. This gets very REAL.This is about motherhood and marriage essentially. The lives we build and love in all it's forms. The way routine can lead to rebellion against yourself. Packed with uncomfortable truths - sometimes wanting more does not mean wanting differently.Kate is in a hotel room with James. Both of them are married to other people and they have been meeting like this for years. Then the hotel goes into lockdown. As the world outside of the hotel turns violent and unknowing- the room becomes a prison of memories, unapologetic truths, and, confessions. The tensions are high but so are the internal revelations. Going deeper inside to see how you arrived at this point in your life.Trapped in Kate’s head- drowning in her own doubts and defensive justifications. Rediscovering her love for her husband and children. Her raw and honest internal monologue works because it is honest about how contradictory people are. How we can love deeply and still step out of marriage.This novel is full of small, aching thoughts like how beautiful Kate's marriage to Vic are. How in the ordinariness of it - the inside jokes, and routines of their long relationship and realizing what's at stake of being lost. Do Not Disturb Room 706
Room 706 was not quite what I expected based on the brief description of the book. While the premise initially seemed interesting and suggested a compelling storyline, the overall reading experience did not fully meet those expectations.The book does attempt to address themes that reflect some of the issues currently taking place today in our country today. In that regard the subject matter feels timely and relevant.In the end, Room 706 offered an interesting concept, but did not deliver the reading I had anticipated.Ver másVer menos

A "Can't Put This Down" novel. Wow. I stayed up late two nights in a row reading this - my highest compliment.A young wife and mother has an affair with a man she meets through work but hardly knows. They meet regularly for great sex...and nothing more. Then, terrorists take over the hotel while they finish up one of these meetings. What will happen? This book keeps you hooked up until the last sentence. In between scenes of waiting for the terrorists to strike (or not?), our protagonist goes over the history of her marriage to Vic, a great husband and dependable father.This novel also gives readers lots to think about. What's a marriage really about? Does sex necessarily have anything to do with marriage? Can they be separate? And when push comes to shove, who do you really love - someone you have great sex with or someone who remembers to pick up the pet from the vet's office when things go south.Excellent. Review of Room 706 by Ellie Levenson - rated 2 StarsI was looking forward to reading this author's debut novel with great anticipation and was happy when the publisher approved me to read and review it. Unfortunately, I didn't like the book, and after waiting a week to review it, my thoughts have clarified as to why I didn't.Personally, I think the marketing of the book did this new author a disservice, by advertising it in a manner that led potential readers to expect fast-paced excitement, drama, thrills, action etc. "BRILLIANT!" "EXHILARATING!" Instead, this is a quiet, thoughtful, VERY slow-paced review of a marriage during an unexpected crisis situation that has the woman examining her life, and questioning her relationships and decisions.The female main character lives a domestic life that, despite her love for her family is demanding, tiring, and not necessarily personally fulfilling. I'm sure her situation is relatable to many. Despite her relatability, I didn't find her very likable. Her long reviews of her life back to various points in her relationship with her husband, didn't move me. It's like being taken to a restaurant and being promised one meal and being served another entirely. Count me disappointed.I do think this new author shows skill and I will look for her next book. Tense, suspense-filled love story
Kate and her lover are trapped in a hotel when a terrorist incident unfolds, forcing Kate not only to confront the immediate danger, but also to reflect on her life, her choices, and the moments that shaped her.As the story moves between the present crisis and Kate’s past, we see the impact of her decisions on the people around her, particularly her husband, Vic. I found myself feeling deeply sorry for him; his love for Kate felt genuine and steady, and their relationship is explored with real emotional weight.James, on the other hand… I didn’t warm to him at all. His presence in the hotel added tension, but not the kind that made me root for the relationship. That discomfort clearly felt intentional, and it definitely shaped my reading experience.This book sits somewhere between suspense and love story, and that blend led to quite mixed feelings for me. There were moments of genuine tension and reflection, but also moments where I felt conflicted about the characters and their choices.Overall, Room 706 is a thought-provoking read that explores love, loyalty, and consequence under extreme pressure, one that left me unsettled rather than resolved. I suppose it’s not the book’s fault that it was absurdly hyped, but what a feeble effort. An ending that demands to be talked about? I don’t think so. I guessed what a good ending would have been and this wasn’t it. The book dragged and was samey throughout. Vic is wish-fulfilment territory, totally unconvincing. James is cooker-cutter ordinary and would an ‘affair’ of this pointlessness really have dragged on for years with no change / development. Got it for 99p which is 99p too much.Ver másVer menos

I couldn’t put this book down - it gripped me from the start and cleverly combined a thriller with reflections on motherhood and family life. I loved it!
