If your anything like me your probably more interested in the 1-Star reviews and what could have possibly happened that would make a person simply cringe and scoff at what looks like such a beautiful piece of hardware...just one the “Killer Ethernet e2500” A.KA. “Killer 1535” and Dell Service support. Now this is a known issue, but I didn’t mind giving this laptop a shot, but the Killer Ethernet not only times out on its own, but when it goes down its like Skynet and takes your entire WiFi down with it...not sure why that is. I’m still not really bothered by this, because I’m my great estimation I’m thinking I’ll just contact Dell and they can run some checks, validate my issue, and get me a new card...right? You would be wrong, after 2hrs of customer support I finally had to tell the dude from Costa Rica that I didn’t have any more time and what can we do next, his answer was for me to do some more trouble shooting. I said, I can do that buddy, but I spent a lot of money for Dell to figure this out so I don’t have, and it would have been nice if Dell had a fix for this. Their response was, you need to update your router, which I had to remind them that my router was only 1 yr old, and I’m not inclined to have to do extensive updates to the laptop or my home network because Dell picked a poor Ethernet with compatibility issues... anyways the computer is really great, you’ll love the esthetics, and hardware but beware of this Ethernet card and certainly don’t expect a glorious reception from their customer support. It’s a layered bureaucracy that give very little real authority to the first line team. It will frustrating and painful...sigh it looked so awesomeVer másVer menos

you'd think it'd be better than this
Dont bash my feedback. I know to expect bulkiness and weight from a gaming laptop.Still....too bulky, too heavy, the Alienware ability to change colors is confusing and extremely buggy. For nearly $2500.....you'd think it'd be better than this. I sent it back and got a full refund. Completely not satisfied.Ver másVer menos

The CPU is a 4 core 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7 processor. The speakers are mounted in the front of the laptop and is powered by a realtek playback system from an Intel sound card. The sound quality is good for the location and size of the speakers. The overall look of the laptop is great and general game performance is excellent as well. The game performance was tested using Star Wars: The Old Republic maxed out on graphics option within the game. There was no lag and fast loading time.There are some issues that have been found with this laptop. For the most part the laptop`s network Adapter does not maintain a connection to the internet through the network. This issue persist after a full reboot of the modem, router and the laptop. This interruption normally lasts about 5-10 seconds but happens about 2-5 times within one minute and very annoying. However this issue does seems only to present itself when attempting to play an online game like Star Wars: The Old Republic or downloading large files, like a patch for said game. Normal internet use like playing music videos on YouTube or watching a show on Netflix does not seem to cause the drop on internet connection. I also tested the laptop while it was connected to the router with an Ethernet cable, and there was no drop of internet connectivity. Checked the drivers for the network adapter and the latest drivers were already being used and the drivers were released October 2016. Another issue is when the laptop being to load the Star Wars: The Old Republic game there is some graphic tearing, this seems to only happen when the screen goes from game play to a loading screen.Temperature of the CPU and Graphics card are as follows. CPU maintains an average core temp of 37 Celsius to 42 Celsius and the graphic card has average temp of 41 Celsius. During game play in window mode, the temperature of CPU jumps to 63 Celsius- 69 Celsius. The CPU maximum temperature before failing is 100 Celsius. The graphic card comes up to 59 Celsius- 62 Celsius with a maximum temp of 94 Celsius. So over clocking either the CPU or the GPU is not recommended unless a laptop cooling pad is used.One last interesting feature is the Tobii Eye Tracking program. This program allows the computer to use the integrated camera (lid must be up/ open) to wake the laptop from sleep when you approach and put the laptop into sleep mode when you leave after a certain period of time of your choosing.Overall the laptop has some great features and excellent components installed. After doing some updates to drivers of the GPU and the network adapter card, and to Windows the Wi-Fi portion of the network card seems to have stabilized while downloading or playing an online game, with that solved there is still the issue of graphic tearing during some loading screens while in full screen mode. This is still occurring after ensure that the graphic drive for the GPU are up to date. Also there seems to be an issue of trying to use the mouse touch pad with using the keyboard at the same time during game play. During heavy use AKA playing Star Wars: The Old Republic the battery will only last about 1-1/2 hours maybe 2+ hours if you modify the power option to more balance or power saving mode.This review was over a span of just over a week to ensure that any and all updates were performed and that if any other issues were to happen, they could be identified and corrected.

ET stays in my home
This is a quick update to my review. The rest of the review follows after the ****** below.I am reluctantly dropping the rating to four stars after another issue cropped up yesterday. Yesterday an Alienware prompt showed up telling me to click and install some kind of Alienware software upgrade. I did this and rebooted the computer as directed. This was when I discovered that the sound no longer worked. I spent a while messing around with windows and Alienware settings. Then I tried Alienware (i.e. Dell) SupportAssist. The diagnostics there could not find a problem but suggested I try some kind of Windows 10 diagnostics (I forget the name - but not the usual control panel stuff). The diagnostics suggested turning off sound effects (again that might not be the correct name) and I got sound back - had to do a little more fiddling to get it to sound almost normal. Overall, I had to waste at least half an hour to get the sound back and I am not fully sure that it is now as good as it was before the update.This problem alone should not merit a downgrade to 4 stars. However my original review below mentions another undocumented issue with sleep mode. Taken together these merit a downgrade. I do not believe that most gamers with a couple of grand to spare on a laptop want to spend a lot of time fooling around with unnecessary problems caused by a lack of documentation.******I have had this computer for a couple of days and love almost everything about it except for one fixable problem that I encountered. Let me explain the problem and how I fixed it. For most gamers this problem doesn't matter. So, if you get bored with my problem and it doesn't matter to you just skip to *****.I am used to going into settings on my computers and adjusting the settings so that the PC will never go into sleep mode or power down just because it feels lonely. Well I did this on the little Alien and guess what? If I walk away from the computer it goes into sleep mode after a few minutes. I don't think it does this when I am playing a movie on the screen but it does it with other tasks and this would have been a deal-killer for me - EXCEPT I finally figured out the fix. . .I noticed that the computer would not go to sleep if I was close to it - say within 3 feet - more specifically if my head or hands were close to it. This is due to Tobii - a cute system that tracks your eyes and other movements. I pondered this for a while and figured that both Tobii and the Microsoft go to sleep setting must be daisy chained onto the clock interrupt. I guessed Tobii must be overriding the Microsoft go to sleep settings. The way that daisy-chaining of interrupt service routines works, the Tobii routine would get executed BEFORE the Microsoft settings routine - and I guess that if Tobii's settings say "go to sleep" then Microsoft's settings never get to have their say. Tobii SHOULD pay attention to its settings when Tobii reckons you are near your computer but it SHOULD defer to Microsoft's settings when you are away from your computer. So I go to a program called Tobii settings and, lo and behold, Tobii has an adjustable setting that will send your computer to sleep if you are not nearby after 3 minutes. So I changed this setting and my problem was solved. But what Tobii should do is NOT go to sleep if the Microsoft go to sleep setting says not to - I think the manufacturer should make a couple of changes to Tobii's settings and interrupt handler. Either that or they should put some language in the documentation to alert you to this possible settings conflict.*****So that was my complaint and I almost took a star off for it. However there is much to love about this little ET.First, it is quite hefty - the heaviest laptop I have ever had. Some people may not like that but it definitely gives an impression of being solidly built. I am pretty sure that if I encountered a mugger and whacked him upside the head with the Alien, my PC would not be the one feeling the pain. I don't know how much of that heft is essential but I am sure that a good chunk of it goes for stuff like heat sinks.On the subject of heat, I read some reviews of other Alienware models and heat seemed to be a problem. Well, I can detect slight warmth after running this for a couple of days but it certainly isn't getting hot. Now, I don't know how hot it would get if you overclock it. (and I am not going to learn about how to turn on overclocking until I need to) The manufacturer's blurb says you can overclock to 4.4GHz and my control panel tells me that it is currently running at 2.9GHz. So overclocking would run this baby faster and it would get warmer. Likewise I am sure that some tasks like heavy graphics will make the I7 chip run hotter.The screen is very bright and impressive. Great resolution (this machine is supposed to be able to support 4K video) and you can see the screen clearly from a pretty wide angle. Games play much much faster on this than they did on my old PC (I confess it was an Asus laptop that I got for all of $139 at Best Buy's 2015 Thanksgiving day sale.). The screens now update blindingly fast (and dismiss my theory that slow games were due to internet lag).Doubtless serious gamers will attach either a fancy sound system or surround sound headphones to the Alien. I have not yet done that. I have played a couple of movies on it and I have to say that the built in stereo sound is the best that I have ever encountered on an unenhanced computer.Do not expect the I7 chip to be significantly faster - except on the graphics and video side of things.I have not opened the case of this laptop to see if there is space for a second hard drive. I am pretty sure that doing so would void my warranty. The case is large enough that it might easily have room for a second hard drive. Then again, 1.5 terabytes should be enough for most of us.This comes with quite a few sockets and ports, as you should expect, and some of the ports are new to me. What it does NOT come with is a DVD drive and that is a surprise in a machine of this quality and expense - but apparently common for gaming laptops (and so I did NOT deduct a start for the DVD). There looks to be room on the right hand side of the machine for a DVD slot. Maybe they figure noone uses DVDs anymore and just downloads everything. Well, I still like to watch movies on DVD and also like to have a place where I can burn a DVD.All in all I like my little buddy ET.
