A Staple I Always Keep on Hand

This is one of those staples I always keep on hand. It's become a reliable part of my routine, and I find myself reaching for it time and time again. When something works this well, I don't feel the need to keep searching for alternatives.It's dependable, well-made, and consistently does exactly what I need it to. Excellent Pencil Sharpener for Prisma Pencils. Here's why:

When you use hundreds of Prisma Pencils, keeping them sharp is hard work. After a few years, you find yourself collecting pencil sharpeners, hoping to find THE one that makes it easy, that produces a fine point, that holds breakage to a minimum, that feels good in the hand, and other attributes as well.This sharpener meets all the above requirements. Let me describe why I like it:• It is large enough to fit in the hand so that you can hold it steady. A precise angle must be maintained, so a sharpener that is steady in the hand is half-way there before you even put the pencil in.• It has a ⅜ inch neck that grips pencils with close tolerance. This is the other half of getting that precise angle and maintaining it. As you turn the pencil, the neck holds the pencil steady and doesn't allow it to tilt in relation to the sharpener. I just checked a half-dozen pencil sharpeners whose necks were from 1/16 inch to ⅛ inch. They do not hold the pencil straight.• This sharpener produces two points; wide and narrow. If you are a pencil artist, you know when each type is more favorable. Most sharpeners do one or the other. usually it's the fat slope, whose point wears quickly, but otherwise lasts a long time. The fine point will do detail work for a little longer between sharpenings. I'm very glad to have both kinds.• It collects wood and core shavings. They stay inside. If you turn it over, you don't get colored grit on your hands, which then gets on your drawings. The lid keeps everything in, yet flips up instantly when needed.• Empties easily once you figure out how. How to remove the cap: the top ⅜" (or just under a half-inch with the cap snapped down) is the part that comes off. It looks like part of the body, but it is tapered so that you can push up on it with your thumbs, and it will come straight out. Do not twist! Do not pull on the cap. The cap will last a long time if you don't pull or twist it. So, just get your thumbs under that last half-inch (avoid the decorative "wrap" part) and push straight up.• Large enough to hold a lot of shavings, yet small enough to fit in most bags without having to reorganize.• Will not dump shavings in your drawing bag/satchel/pack/case/drawer.• Pencil shavings are not pretty to look at. The smoked color of the Prismacolor sharpener means you don't have to.• Stands easily on its circular base.• While it is round (cylindrical), it is weighted so as to resist rolling. On a flat-rubber surface, I had to tilt it beyond 8 degrees to cause it to roll (empty). That's a greater incline than any railroad grade, and more than all but the steepest of automobile grades. It'll give you a fighting chance to catch it before it rolls down the hill you're sitting on while drawing Mount Rushmore.About broken pencil leads in Prismacolors:A dull pencil sharpener, and/or one that does not hold the pencil at the same exact angle against the blade, can indeed break the lead before you've finished sharpening, but that is not the major cause of broken leads. Prismacolors are very soft. Drop a pencil, and even though the wood appears unbroken, the soft core "crayon" inside will shatter in as many as a dozen places. Trying to sharpen one of these is an exercise in futility, and you often have to wait until you get to the end of one before it stops breaking off inside the sharpener. This is not the fault of the sharpener, though as stated above, dull cutters and loose necks can cause most sharpeners to twist off a shattered core before THIS sharpener would do so. Generally, as long as these cutters are kept sharp, this sharpener will resist breaking the core of the pencil. It must be understood, however, that once a pencil has been dropped onto a hard surface, or bent, its core is shattered and no sharpener can prevent it from breaking. You can only hope to find a piece that's long enough to hold until sharpened, then strong enough to hold while you draw.To sum up: the broken cores inside a pencil get twisted out by a dull sharpener or one that cannot maintain a proper angle. While no sharpener can prevent your pencil cores from being broken internally, this one at least does its best not to exacerbate the problem. In short, don't blame the sharpener... up to a point.Ok, so it's a long review for one of the simplest and ordinary tools in our box. But the thing is, there are differences between pencil sharpeners. I have them all. I love some of my tiny, handy sharpeners that can go in a pocket, a pencil case, an Altoids box (along with several erasers and other tools), but they are all guilty of being messy and not holding a perfect angle. This Prismacolor sharpener may be a bit more bulky, but it is probably the best sharpener I've used on Prismacolor Pencils, for the reasons stated above. If it wears out quickly, then I'll take back my 5-star rating, but so far it deserves what I gave it.ShooshieVer más

Prism sharpener yes

Knew about the pencils but never the sharpener.So far so good sharpens nice, plenty of room for shaving.Little tight on removing the lid, other than that 👍🏽

excellent sharpener but very hard to open to dump shavings receptacle

I bought this sharpener to replace an all purpose hand sharpener because the latter would not give me the sharp point I need for much of my coloring work. It arrived yesterday and, as other reviewers have noted, it was not at all clear as to how to open it to empty the shavings receptacle. So I went on line to get instructions and then tried to open it. While on-line instructions made opening it look easy, I could not open it. My husband finally got it open. After repeated efforts to open it and then having to ask my husband to do it, I gave up using the shavings receptacle and am now using it over a container to catch the shavings. It is terrific at achieving the sharp point I need with little effort and I'd give it 5 stars if not for the above problem.Ver más

This has worked well do far!

SO FAR this works well without shredding the pencil core. I am glad I tried it. I have yet to figure out how to empty it. But I wanted something that would be good enough to not destroy my pencil and lead and this has done both. I am glad I got it.

Best sharpener ever!!

An absolute necessity if you use color pencils! The sharpener is very sharp and has two holes. One fits the Prismacolor pencils and the other is just a tad smaller which could fit some of the other brand pencils that I've found are a little thinner. The top is secure so the shavings don't spill out. This sharpener is such a great value I was thinking of getting another and trying it out on eye liner pencils. Great product!Ver más

THE BEST FOR COLORED PENCILS

There are a million sharpeners on the market. I finally found the best one for me. I use Prismacolor Premier pencils. I am confined to bed so I don't want a plugin sharpener. This sharpener is small, fits in your hand. There is a decent sized compartment for the shavings. There are two different sharpeners, one for a very long sharp point, the other gives a sharp point, but not as long. One thing that they do not mention is that the sharpeners are made in Germany. Prismacolor Custom Shapener

I purchased the Prismacolor pencil sharpener. This coordinates with the Prismacolor pencils. It gives you two specific lengths for the sharpened pencil. The guide to the sharpener helps hold the pencil in place while sharpening. The sharpener is emptied by simply pulling apart.. It has a connected top that doesn't seem very sturdy, (I hope it will last after being opened repeatedly)Ver más

私は日本でカリスマカラーを愛用しておりますが、カリスマカラーはプリズマカラーと同一の芯を使って日本国内で加工された製品です。ですから、プリズマカラーと同一の芯であるものをプリズマカラー純正の削り器で削れるということ自体がまず私にとってはうれしいことです。サイズ感としては初めて見たとき「やや大きいかな？」とも思ったのですが、すぐ気にならなくなりました。むしろ削りカスが多く入るということで利点のように感じています。そもそも鉛筆削り器というものは消耗品であって、刃の切れ味が悪くなってきたら交換するものなのですが、私はこの削り器が気に入ったので、刃が鈍くなったら外して刃を研いででも使い続けるでしょう。（刃はプラスのネジで止められています買ってよかったと心から思いながら毎日使っています。(20260504：追記)この削り器は通常の鉛筆はもちろん使えるのですが、カランダッシュルミナンス6901のような太軸（8ｍｍ）の色鉛筆も削ることができます。鉛筆削り器は様々なものを試しましたが中でも本商品がもっとも鋭く削れます。ピンッピンの針のような仕上がりです。Ver más

Cannot pull out cover

Sharpener sharpens all pencils sharply without breaking, performs well as compared to the price paid. However, I cannot seem to pull the cover to empty the shavings.

Sacapuntas 10/10

Exactamente lo que necesitaba, mis colores estaban muy dañados por los sacapuntas genéricos y este con sus dos espacios para sacar punta, arregló sin problemas algunos colores cuarteados, algo elevado el precio pero vale totalmente la pena.
