Powerful, useful product - but use it correctly please.
I am a Seachem aficionado, admittedly, but it's because their stuff works great, and this product is no exception. Amguard will remove toxic ammonia very efficiently, but it shouldn't be used unless in a dire emergency. There's several reasons why:- Amguard is a reducing agent, like most water treatments. This means oxygen will be reduced for the fish in the tank for some time after application. Don't use it if your tank is poorly aerated or has particularly warm water (warm water holds less oxygen). Water changes and Prime are your better bet for a minor ammonia problem, as this is a much more powerful reducer and if overused (or used improperly) it can cause fish death.- Amguard might not play nice with other water treatments. Because it's such a powerful reducer, it can cause other products (even those made by Seachem) to act strangely. For example, DO NOT use this with Seachem's Cupramine, as it will reduce the relatively benign copper into a more toxic form. Cupramine's instructions specify this to some extent, but it doesn't specify how much more powerful Amguard is. If you accidentally mix AmGuard with something like Cupramine, you have an emergency on your hands and need to do as big a water change as possible ASAP.- If this product is needed, SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH YOUR TANK. If you're experiencing a "mini-cycle" (a crash in your beneficial bacteria population) for some reason, for example, this is an appropriate product to use. If your ammonia is high enough to necessitate the use of this product for unknown reasons, you need to track down the cause while treating, as this isn't going to cure anything, it just masks the symptoms. Check for a dead fish, vacuum your gravel, do water changes more regularly, basically find the problem instead of just adding this product to the tank and calling it a day.Ver másVer menos
