The Gates of Zion
I read this book many years ago and loved it :) It's a story about Israel being remade in 1947 with partition. The book is a fictional colorful and careful portrayal of people of the time, centered around the holocaust, a subject that may be lost in 2026 to my sad dismay. It's a series of books and author Bodie Thoene nails it to the wall. I have a great hardcover of it finally :) Great quality book I'm adding to my personal library.Ver másVer menos

Excellent Choice
Fabulous book! I discovered this book 20 or so years ago after traveling through Europe and Israel. The timing to read this was so perfect back then - it brought all I was seeing to life. All these years later I'm so excited to once again have it in my hands and begin the journey again. I highly recommend anything written by the Thoene's, but especially this series. It will grip you and pull you into the story like nothing you've ever read before. And it's historically accurate.Ver másVer menos

Great Read!
I have been an avid reader of non-fiction accounts of World War II and the Holocaust. It is a history that must never be forgotten and as a teacher I always made sure to include literature of the period in my classes. For some reason I had not read much about the events surrounding this critical period of 1947-48. This book was an excellent introduction, well-researched and with relatable characters. This is a nicely written easy to follow story. I prefer the in depth intertwining of real history and fictional but plausible charicters found in Mitchner, Clavel and Follett but so few authors can make the commitments required to write such intellectually challenging and rewarding books. Therefore, we read stories geared toward mass audiences. Among the mass genre historical fiction this is a pleasant, light entertainibg read. I will pay for, and read, the entire series. When I return from Iraq, I will buy paperbacks and add them to my libraty.Ver másVer menos

Accurate, Adventurous Drama in a Changing World
The Gates of Zion was a pleasant surprise! I've read plenty of historical books about this time and place in history, and I found this book to be accurate throughout: not only with the facts, but also with the character's perceptions. The Thoene's round out the history into a compelling story with plots that pique the reader's interest, characters and situations one can sympathize with, and an overall sense of 1940's drama that seems like a film from that time period.I was especially impressed with the authors' accuracy of the history and geography of Jerusalem; I can tell they have at least visited the city before! I found the characters to be pretty believable as well: sort of a cross between Leon Uri's "The Exodus" and Indiana Jones personalities.I'm very much looking forward to reading the other books in this series, and then diving into some of the other Thoene books!Ver másVer menos

Excellent reading for lovers of historical fiction
I read this book when it was first published and wanted to read it again. It’s even better than I remembered and is so good for bringing the story to life.

Riveting Story Line
The Gates of Zion far exceeded any other inspirational books that I have read in the last 30 years. The Thoene's historical fiction books are so filled with knowledge and the way they describe the locations, I think I am right in the middle of all the action. I am in the third book of this series and can't put it down. I will always be a fan of the writings by this couple. I love to read, but want to learn and they have satisfied that desire.I have read many Christian books but most of them follow the same theme, man/woman falls in love, one of them is not a believer and then we follow the process where he/she becomes a believer, they get married after some predicted bumps in the road. The love they have for each other makes me, personally, upset because I have never seen that kind of love between a husband and wife. They make me very dissatisfied with the 42 years of marriage I had before losing my husband. I find myself questioning if he ever really loved me, just because he didn't love me as in the books.After reading The Gates of Zion I have a renewed appreciation of the Jewish Nation and all they have gone through. It blows my mind that unbelievers would hate them because of the label " Killers of Christ" when those that hate them can't know who Christ really is and why He came, nor that they/we also put Him on that cross. I don't like uninformed people.The only change I would like is, if they put in paranthesis the meaning of a Hebrew word.Ver másVer menos

Loved it - can't wait to read the rest of the series.
I wasn't sure when I picked this up, whether it would hold my interest. But wow - what a ride! This is a story that is full of adventure, courage, and great characters. I will be reading the remainder of the series, eagerly!The authors have very skillfully woven in history with their narrative, so that I feel I am on the streets of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv at a pivotal moment in history. I started reading this before bed, but it's too exciting a read. No sleep!Ver másVer menos

Excellent
Ayant acheté les quatre tomes suivants de cette série, il me manquait le premier tome introuvable en français. Je l'ai donc pris en anglais dans sa version numérique. Je n'avais jamais lu un livre en anglais de ma vie. Armée de mon dictionnaire, je me suis lancée et j'ai été emportée par ce récit et j'ai abandonné peu à peu le dictionnaire tant l'écriture est fluide. Je suis ravie de cette lecture mais contente d'être arrivée au bout pour commencer le tome 2 en français...Ver másVer menos

Another awesome book by the Thoenes
Another well written and researched book by the Thoenes....truly enjoyed how the Jewish history has come to life through this book.

Very enjoyable read!
Loved this book. This is an easy read and the author is a gifted story teller. I enjoyed reading this book a lot. Highly recommend if you enjoy historical fiction.
